The actor who played the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket is coming to Washington, D.C., next week to lobby Congress to pass a long-stalled bill.
R. Lee Ermey is the national spokesman for a growing grassroots effort behind legislation sponsored by Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) that would rename the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.
Ermey, who was in the Marine Corps for 11 years, has been in over 100 movies, including Apocalypse Now, Dead Man Walking and Leaving Las Vegas, according to imdb.com.
Over the past decade, Jones has repeatedly pushed his colleagues to pass his bill. Joness bill has 367 co-sponsors. Roberts (R-Kan.), a Marine Corps veteran, introduced companion legislation last year.
The Marine Corps League, which is orchestrating the grassroots effort with Ermey, has started a petition-writing campaign and is bringing supporters of Joness legislation to Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Marines have fought and died with their Navy brothers and sisters for more than 200 years, said Michael Blum, Marine Corps League executive director in a statement. Its finally time to give the Marine Corps the recognition the branch has long deserved.
Although the Marine Corps has been a separate service since the National Security Act of 1947, it does not get equal billing with the Navy, Air Force and Army, each of which has a Pentagon department named after it. Since the Marine Corpss earliest days, it has operated under the Department of the Navy.

LOL, that was quick.
The Navy has started a navy infantry though.
Everybody knows that the best marine is a submarine!
Ah-Oooga!
Watching main gates for the Navy since 1775, and haven’t lost one yet.
I think he's doing it on purpose to express his contempt for the military. Thinks they're all corpses already, or something.
And at one time the Navy marched ahead of Marines but that changed during WWII. Considering all that we expect of (America’s 911, First to Fight, etc.) Marines is really that big of a deal to actually acknowledge them as being a part of the Navy? Not going to “tear you up” just find it a little sad.

No negative talk here. But I do want to mention the Navy. When I served in Nam with the 1st Marine div. there were 2 groups of people I was very proud to serve with.Corpsman, and Sea bees. These guys were outstanding! I, as a former Marine don’t need special recognition as we were formed, in part, to deal with pirates for the Navy. We do our job, and the Navy does their job. And I think we all do it pretty well.
I agree. If anything it should be renamed to Department of Marines and the Navy.

ROTFL!!!
“..BTW, did you see that Obamby, in a speech called a corpsman a corpse man. And repeated it.”
A bigger TOTUS never there was.

And it wasn’t the first slip up with “Corpse man”.
Check this out from October 09’:
Obama pronounces Navy Corpsman, Navy Corpse men.

11 years. I didn’t know that. The honorary Gunny had less service time than I did and has managed to cash in on it pretty well. More power to him; I enjoy his various History Channel shows.
<<
Loved Gunny until I heard he supports BO on the birth certificate issue.
>>
Sorry, but gunny is right on that one. Captains and Majors don’t address the Commander in Chief. It’s called the chain of command.
After learning about corpsemen, imagine what his reaction will be when someone tells his what is inside submarines.
he also thinks BO is doing a good job on the war.
Do you also agree with that?
“11 years.”
I believe he got out because of a bad knee.

To Hell with that. Just separate the two and have a Dept. of the Marine Corps!
Apart from substituting "very" for "pretty" I'd agree completely.
Does that mean that the Marine Corp would lose this distinction: soldiers and Marines?
I think they screwed things up when names went on cammies. Marine is all that’s needed.
Love the Marine Corp~ Oorah! :p

Nope. Where’d you hear that?
