Seattle - The successful launch of new operating system Windows 7 propelled Microsoft to record revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009, the software giant reported Thursday.

Microsoft reported net income of 6.7 billion, a 60 per cent increase on the year prior, while revenue rose 18 per cent to 19 billion dollars.

'This is a record quarter for Windows units,' Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, said in a news release. 'We are thrilled by the consumer reception to Windows 7 and by business enthusiasm to adopt Windows 7.'

The company said it sold more than 60 million Windows 7 licenses in the second quarter, making the operating system Microsoft's fastest-selling in history. That helped the company's Windows and Windows Live division rack up 6.9 billion dollars in revenue, an increase of about a third over the period a year earlier

60 million Windows 7 units sold in just over 2 months is just insane.

Is Windows 7 radically different than Windows XP? I love Windows XP, and am afraid Windows 7 will be more like Vista which I didn’t like at all. How is Windows 7 similar or different from Windows XP? Why would I want Windows 7? What’s the advantage of it?

I still don’t know why I should upgrade from Windows 2000.

I’ve had windows in one form or another since 1995, including XP and VISTA(the very worst) and I can tell you I have NEVER been happier then I am with 7.The increase in my systems operating speed alone is worth the price and when you add to that the absence of the infuriating “Internet Explorer has discovered a problem and must shut down” message. and the lock ups which occurred frequently it is easy to see why this is such a popular OS.

If you are happpy with Windows XP, of course you shouldn’t change it.
Why would I get a new wife, if I am happy with my current wife? :)
But, Windows 7 is an excellent operating system. I have been using it for over a year, in beta, then after it was went RTM (Released To Manufacture).

Yes, but what’s different about it. Why would it be better? And your wife analogy humored me.

I'm one of the few(apparently) who has had no problems with Vista, but Windows7 is very smooth. I only use 7 at night in the rec room, but every night I find some new and cool thing to mess with on it. Stuff that actually is useful as well.

Oh, if you like XP and it works, I don't blame you for not upgrading. It really was the best thing since Win95 came out.

You're better off with Mozilla Firefox as your web browser.

At some point people running Windows XP won't have no choice but to purchase Windows 7. Eventually Microsoft will no longer support XP. I'm assuming this will not be the situation between you and your wife. ;o)

I’ve also been told that Windows 7 auto updates most, if not all, of it’s drivers. Vista does not. I have Vista on my new desktop and am changing over to Windows 7 for that reason ~ messed up drivers.

This may cover it, albeit its from Windows 7 beta(pre-release).

Windows 7 beta 1 performance - How does the OS compare to Vista and XP?

-snip

http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3236&page=2&tag=col1;post-3236 Windows 7 is much faster than XP, on the same hardware. It's a fast, reliable, relatively easy to use. It does what an OS is supposed to do, that is just stay in the background and let you get one with your work, without you even knowing it's there.

Is all software running on XP compatible with 7 or is there a list of what software is and isn’t compatible?

Back in November when we had that nor-easter and a power glitch one of my computers died and I had to replace it. the new computer has Windows 7. I love it. Except for one thing.......trying to network with the other two computers and share files. One of the other computers had Vista and the other had XP. Couldn't get the network to work. Ended up buying two more copies of Win7 to install on those computers. Then it took forever for the computers to see each other. Ended up being the McAfee firewall in the Cox Communications free security suite. Switched to Windows firewall and had no more problems.
