Seattle - The successful launch of new operating system Windows 7 propelled Microsoft to record revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009, the software giant reported Thursday.
Microsoft reported net income of 6.7 billion, a 60 per cent increase on the year prior, while revenue rose 18 per cent to 19 billion dollars.
'This is a record quarter for Windows units,' Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, said in a news release. 'We are thrilled by the consumer reception to Windows 7 and by business enthusiasm to adopt Windows 7.'
The company said it sold more than 60 million Windows 7 licenses in the second quarter, making the operating system Microsoft's fastest-selling in history. That helped the company's Windows and Windows Live division rack up 6.9 billion dollars in revenue, an increase of about a third over the period a year earlier

Pinging the Linux guild won't help you. W7 is vastly superior. It also enjoys a 90+% market share soon to reach it's first 100 million. There IS a reason for that. (Outside of some snarky comeback about Vista and IE)
Used XP for years. Used Vista x64 for about 5 months. Now on Win 7 x64. Each time it was worth the upgrade for performance although Vista was a bit sketchy around the edges at times.
Much happier with win 7 over Vista - very stable for me (although there are a few problems with the file dialogs) and win 7 should be around a long time just like XP was.
Might as well jump in and get acquainted, IMO.
Heck I run Virtual PC on my XP machine to play Win 95 and Dos games. The golden age of PC gaming IMHO. Either that or I am just officially an old fart now.
If it works for you, then use it. Don't get all defensive over nothing.
Just speculating but maybe it's your PASON system that is the problem. Setting the os wars aside linux is noted for basic stability and up-time without having to restart for system changes.
My only point is that it might not be fair to blame linux in general for the failings of some proprietary system. Most all proprietary systems choke after awhile because they don't have the os development that a mainstream os has.
Which version of Virtual PC do you use on your XP machine for Win 95 and DOS?
All the newer games are incredible. The graphics are almost real looking. There are several desktop platforms now made specifically for gaming and the graphics drivers are now into the high gig range.
A did love some of the older programs though and there is a place for both.
Are these rankings based on subjective opinion or objective measurements? I’d like to see some actual raw measured data rather than a chart with no unit of measure.
Can’t find the command for setting the default application when opening files.
Doesn’t recognize web files downloaded on the Mac OS. When these files are transferred to the Windows 7 OS, I get gibberish, in both Firefox and IE. Maybe there’s an app for this? Yet if I write the web source code on the Mac and then transfer the file to 7, the system recognizes it perfectly.
Actually, the PASON system is very basic. When changes are made, the only option is to do a complete restart.
And, the PASON system is a world wide system for most all Oil Production facilities and drilling contractors. So, you might say that it IS a mainstream OS.
There are 2 newer types available that are based on Windows and they are beginning to trounce PASON. They do not have any where near the problems this Linux based system has.

I had experienced the “grey screen” plenty of times and in each instance the OS gave up trying to fix the problem and just closed IE. With 7 I have noticed occasionally a grey screen which almost immediately (5 seconds or so)reverts back to normal function as Windows 7 is able to diagnose and fix the problem.
This along with the tremendous increase in speed has made me a fan of W7.

When it came to finding the printer (HP C51890), which I finally plugged into the router, Vista and 7 took minutes to find the printer and connect. It took me two days to get the XP box to finally print through the router.
Your problems could stem from a number of factors. Hardware, Software (OS / Applications), administration, or a combination thereof.
My initial thought was: you need to replace your SysAdmin/DBA. But when you get into some of these specialized systems you can run into problems that no OS can handle well if the specialized software is the main culprit. And believe me, I've seen it before. Troubleshooting such things as you describe is never easy, and never quick, unless an exact same thing has happened before on other companies systems.
BTW: MySQL is available for Windows, but whether or not PASON is set to run on MySQL running on Windows is another matter. Switching OS' may just give you a whole new set of problems.
ClearType anti-aliasing was the only reason I could find.
In XP you have to set up the home network. Have you done that? Does the LT find the XP box via the network?
Go to My Computer on the LT and click "My Network" places. Does the XP box come up on the list?
Yeah. First, the usual dumb stuff.
Ensure File and Printer Sharing is turned on, and the printer is shared.
Next, you need to connect to the desktop with an account that has a password. Shares can no longer be connected through an account with no password.
After you connect, you should have no problem printing.
