Republican Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said Monday he regretted comments comparing people who take public assistance to stray animals, but the incident continued to draw fire.
In a phone interview, Bauer said he regretted the remarks "because now it's being used as an analogy, not a metaphor.
"Do I regret it? Sure I do. I wouldn't have to be taking this heat otherwise."
In a speech at a town hall meeting in the Upstate, Bauer revisited instructions he said his grandmother had given him when he was a small child. Bauer said his grandmother, who was not highly educated, had told him to stop feeding stray animals.
"You know why?" he asked. "Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a human ample food supply."
Bauer, 40, later said his intent was to explain the government is "breeding a culture of dependency" with its social program, which he said has grown out of control and "amounts to little more than socialism, paid for by hardworking, tax-paying families ... against their wishes."

Give a man a loaf of bread...
If it was me, I would dare my detractors to prove me wrong.
“strays” ..... how about “parasites”....”tapeworms”...... ??
How come we only hear about these bold statements of truth after somebody’s apologizing for saying them?
Because the MSM is protecting Republicans [/sarc]
Conservatives need to stop falling for this tactic, and that’s all it is: right out of the Alinsky book too.
Find something to be insulted about (doesn’t matter if it is really insulting or not) then attack the person for making the statement (and thus taking the focus off of the idea the person was stating).
Generally, you get what you pay for.
Bauer’s no Conservative, he’s a creepy RINO phony along the lines of Crist of FL.
Truth remains truth.
Why regret it? For a good number of the people on assistance its an absolutely accurate analogy.
What he said was RIGHT!
Be bold Bauer! Stand up for what is right! If you give a man a fish today... you will just have to give him another tomorrow. BUT, TEACH a man to fish and he will provide for himself and his family for a lifetime. This is the heart of conservatism and needs to be addressed head on!
So much for being “pro life”...I find most who say they are pro life are pro fetus. We want to make it against the law to terminate the pregnancy....but...once they are born..to hell with them...starve them so they cant procreate...if they do procreate..make them have those babies too...then they can starve hopefully? Huh? Makes sense..sure....Jesus weeps.
I want to truly HELP people, not treat them like slaves that need to be cared for by a merciful owner. I want to free them from the bondage of welfare, and empower them to take control of their lives, instead of waiting for the next handout of stolen money from do-gooder liberals.
I understand exactly what you are saying and I agree with you. But you are referring to the parents. I am talking about their children going hungry. My daughter has two friends whose children get reduced price breakfasts and lunches. Their mothers are single mothers who have two to three children. They work...but they do not receive child support. Hence, reduced meals. I have no problems with this. We are talking about the children paying the price for havind deadbeat fathers.
Somewhere along the way did stupidity become a job requirement for elective office and I just missed it?
