"Given the consequences of contact may not be what we initially hoped for, then we need governments and the UN to get involved in any discussions." We're doomed.

"May" not be friendly? Who knew?
To: Mount Athos
Govt? UN? To get involved?
Get serious. If “they” have interstellar travel, we need intellilgent people to deal with them.
Ain’t none O’those in govt or the UN.
Get serious!
To: Mount Athos
Well heck... If they are so advanced that they are space travelers, we don’t have a chance anyway. Just have to hope they are veggies...

We will have to figure out their intentions when we meet any aliens. There are more then enough unfriendly humans to worry about currently.

Until we learn to communicate with honey bees and ants and termites, we need not worry about communicating with ET

""Given the consequences of contact may not be what we initially hoped for, then we need governments and the UN to get involved in any discussions," he told The Sunday Times." Leftists & Liberals want to add:
"We need new, massive global taxes (especially on Americans) to fund government efforts, departments and grants to study and deal with the problem of why the space aliens don't like us."

I'm not sure how many millions of species of animals there are on this planet, but from what I can tell, only one evolved into a sometimes benevolent life form. I see no reason to believe why it would be any different out there. If there's life - which seems very likely, statistically - my guess is it's not so friendly - again statistically.
