Is The Tea Party Over?
Newsweek ^ | 1/22/10 | Joe Scarborough

Posted on 01/23/2010 8:43:20 AM PST by Kartographer

The more important question for the populist movement may be whether this loosely organized political phenomenon can remain intact long enough to challenge a two-party system that has dominated American politics since George Washington rode off to Mount Vernon to live out his final years. If history is any guide, the prospects of long-term success are as unlikely as a Republican winning a Senate seat in Massachusetts.

Let me say that my initial reaction was much like yours. I couldn’t understand how she could back him. After thinking about it, I think that she made the right decision — for now.

Look, I can’t stand McCain. First, he is not only not our friend, but that he is an enemy to conservatism. However, that is not the way that many people see him. Second, you know that no matter what Palin does, she gets attacked. If she turned her back on McCain right now, she’d be ripped to shreds for not being loyal, etc. The ones who would believe the attacks would be the people that she has not yet won over and they are legion.

By showing loyalty, she does risk our ire and it may cost her some support but I see a pretty smart woman who can read the tea (party) leaves. She hasn’t really made a dumb move yet and for that reason, I will continue to trust her to do the right thing.

That doesn’t mean that she shouldn’t be questioned or ever criticized. I’m just not ready to throw her overboard for showing respect to the man who served his country and gave her a chance in the national spotlight.

Exactly correct. What we need from the Tea Party is exactly what they are providing....a guiding light for the Conservatives and a path to kick the progressives out of the stewardship role of the Republican party for good. They don’t need to become the head of anything, only the soul, keeping the head pointed in the right direction and kicking it’s ass when it doesn’t.

First of all — shut up Scarborough, you has been pretend Conservative you.

Second, NO, the Tea Party movement has just begun to exact the kind of change necessary to restore the Constitutional Republic.

Well - I understand - sorta...Convention centers cost lots of money... Keynote speaker Sara Palin - says she is not taking a fee - but I know they will pay her expenses... not to mention that of others... plus insurance, security, etc.

I read on their site to be a full blow Convention attendee the fee was $560 (counting some kinds of small add on fee). Plus hotel room - discounted at $110 a night...

This convention site/hotel is a plush place — but ... my out of pocket to go would be nearly a $1000 - and that would be doing it on a modest approach.

Big Party — yes — perceptions are everything - substantial is as substantial looks...

But I probably cannot go — way too much money... And I am saving my vacation time and money for the April 15 March on DC.

So the favorite politician of the tea partiers is NOT Sarah Palin, who just recently endorsed and will campaign for John McCain?

While I am not ready yet to throw her overboard, this is a pretty shaky thing to do. I don’t care the reason. THe man is absolute anti-American scum....and she is going to campaign for him.

For the first time since I first heard of her, I hope she fails at something.

“So the favorite politician of the tea partiers is NOT Sarah Palin, who just recently endorsed and will campaign for John McCain?”

Up until her move to support McCain. Right now they are in a holding pattern to hear what she has to tell them at the convention coming up in two weeks. As it stands, two weeks will not make a difference so it is in her court if she expects continued support.

In defense of Sarah, I would say she had to consider that JD was not an announced cadidate at the time and I think McCain might have put some pressure to collect on a debt in order to intimidate JD into not running combined with the McNasty ads being run the last few weeks which have had an effect. But until last night, JD was prohibited from saying anything for fear of FEC investigation threats already leveled by the McCain lawyers.

So, the next two weeks will be very telling because I do know the TPP members that I associate with are very sour on McCain and have been wishing that JD would just go ahead and announce. I am a member of the Tea Party Patriots. If you want to know what the movement is thinking on a day to day basis, I suggest you find a local chapter to join and learn from them instead of the media.
