I first supported Reagan in ‘76 against Ford. What you stated isn’t the full story.
Reagan didn’t support open borders. Reagan said: “A nation without borders is not a nation.” Reagan did sign into law the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. The IRCA included severe penalties for employers who hired illegals, with up to a $1,000,000 fine, improved border enforcement and a legalization provision that was a one time ONLY amnesty. If that law had been enforced and not gutted by Ted Kennedy and the Senate Democrat majority, the IRCA of 1986 would have been successful in the long run and today we wouldn’t be talking about massive illegal immigration across our borders. While I didn’t like the amnesty provision at the time, in the long run it could have worked.
I disagree. Amnesty is amnesty. It only causes more to illegally immigrate. The 1986 Act was a mistake made by a great conservative president, Ronald Reagan.
Mentioning it illustrates a point.
I was a Reagan supporter since 1964. And still am.
