The Scott Heard 'Round the World
American Spectator ^ | January 18, 2010 | Robert Stacy McCain

...

If [Coakley's] defeat can be explained in strictly tactical terms -- a bad campaign by a clueless candidate -- then liberals can argue that the election is neither a negative referendum on the first year of the Obama administration nor a harbinger of dismal Democratic prospects in the November mid-terms.

Such a narrow interpretation of this Massachusetts election -- "The Scott Heard 'Round the World," as Brown's supporters like to say -- ignores the extent to which the Republican has emphasized conservative stances on key issues, including health care, economic policy and national security.

A lieutenant colonel in the National Guard, Brown has relentlessly criticized the Obama administration's decision to grant civilian trials to accused foreign terrorists like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Giuliani pounded that theme Friday while campaigning with Brown here, slamming Coakley for her assertion during a debate last week that terrorists were "gone" from Afghanistan. "What the heck does she think we're doing there?" the former New York mayor said.

Brown has also been a consistent critic of the economic stimulus bill that President Obama pushed through Congress last year. "The fact is the stimulus has not worked. Not one new job has been created in Massachusetts, or anywhere in the nation," Brown said in one of his earliest campaign statements. "Our country can't afford any more stimulus spending that adds to our deficit without adding to employment."

More than anything else, however, it is Brown's opposition to the Democrats' pending health-care legislation that turned the Massachusetts election into a crusade for conservatives nationwide. The Republican has vowed to be the "41st vote" against the bill, preventing Senate Democrats from maintaining the filibuster-proof supermajority needed for final approval.

What's powering Scott Brown to a huge win? Conservatism, stupid. The same platform that Ronald Reagan carried the Bay State with twice in the 1980s. Low taxes, small government and personal freedom.

Let the Democrats blame a Coakley loss on a bad candidate, which means that they did not learn the lesson of this election. They’ll continue blundering on to the November elections, with disastrous results.

I totally agree. I hope the Dems think that the reason they lost this was because of a bad candidate. It will be uglier for the Dems in November if they do believe their own lies.

Careful. You'll bring out the "He's not a Conservative" trolls. Some can't stand the support they see on FR for him.

I dont think it matters, which side puts in which candidate. The people are so fed up with these dems and the person who leads them that they would vote for anyone who isnt a dem.

I dont know if the dems are getting the message. We the people, want them OUT!!

THIS is the harsh truth that the Democrats and ‘moderates” (like McPain, Grahamnesty, et al) will never admit — Conservative principles work every time they are applied, and the MAJORITY of the electorate intuitively know this.

In order for them to be applied, Republicans have to get off their asses and vote, and ALL conservative forces have to engage with the system, especially regarding communication( we are doing well here, vis a vis the internet, talk radio) and vote fraud (we need to do more here).

Great read for the conservative masses. But lets be honest, the RATs of Mass. are angling for their own person to take this seat in two years, and hence they are sitting on their hands allowing this lefty goof to shoot her own foot.

They're happy for her to lose I suspect, because she's such a horrible candidate. No one likes her and in this environment she's terrible baggage.

I have another theory, democrats themselves will not support a woman candidate. Think about all the women candidates that are eliminated in their primaries. Their support of women is just window dressing just as their support of blacks is. Just MHO

I’m won’t be calm until votes are counted and Brown has actually won this thing.

I think you’re right that there is a faction of Rats in MA that is sick of being under the Kennedy Machine’s thumb and they probably secretly enjoy seeing Croakley fail.

If she were close Deval would play the Haitian disaster race card against Brown therefor sealing his win. It looks like his win is in the bag, so the day after he does win the Democratic bag of tricks will be unleashed upon him.
