AUSTIN Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin have helped shift the landscape, but gender issues are still tricky for male candidates in political debates.
Rick Perry may discover the pitfalls when, for the first time in his long political career he's the only man on stage tonight against two female contenders. From gestures to tone to r-e-s-p-e-c-t, the age-old tussle between men and women will be magnified by stage lights and close-up cameras during the hourlong Republican gubernatorial debate in Denton, broadcast live on public television......
Communications and political experts said that in facing off against women, Perry must stay steady and calm. He must not seem to attack. Mostly, he must stay unfailingly polite because TV amplifies a tone and a look and assumes an attitude.
And if he slips, as plenty of male candidates famously have, TV also provides an endless instant replay and becomes the one thing remembered from the debate and not just for the relatively few watching, but for the millions who didn't.
Kay Bailey Hutchison, in her fervor to score political points, must not come across as too "shrill" a word reserved almost exclusively to describe women in debates.
She must avoid a high-pitched tone and anything that resembles scolding. What comes across as forceful for a man is sometimes seen as churlish in a woman. .....
Adding to the peril for both Hutchison and Perry is the presence of Debra Medina, an outsider with little to lose. Tea Party followers have coalesced around Medina, who has pushed gun rights, border defense and state nullification of federal mandates. KERA said it decided to invite Medina to the debate because she had attracted media and public interest.

Whatever!
It’s still a no contest.
PERRY WILL EMERGE AS WINNER.
Romney’s machinery is doing all it can to spin and spin TX poll.
He has invested too much in Hutchinson.
Yep, I feel the same way. I did hear Medina speak on Mark Davis’ show, I believe, and liked what I heard. But I fear she doesn’t have the clout and we don’t know WHO she is. She needs to get advice from Scott Brown! I will check her out and probably make a donation to her campaign. But in the end I will cast a regretful vote for Perry, as I did for McCain.
According to my nearly 2:00am quick algebraic calculations, at that rate I would have to spend more than our entire household annual income on retail goods or other taxable services in order not to come out ahead relative to what we pay now in sales taxes combined with the property taxes on our modest home.
Sounds like a winner of a plan to me.
What’s important to remember about funding government through sales taxes rather than property taxes and/or income taxes is that it distributes the tax burden much more equitably amongst the entire population.
Property taxes and/or income taxes, on the other hand, are easy tools for progressive social/economic “reformers” to use to give special favors to some classes of citizens at the expense of others’ lives, rights, and property. They are (property taxes and income taxes), to put it bluntly, nothing more than tools for government to use in order to facilitate the redistribution of wealth.
Catarac is so full of CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Democratic term.
Does he know what he is saying?
I’ve known the Hutchison family all my life (my mom is good friends with the first Mrs. Hutchison), and I always mispell their last name.
... the time for casting the regretful vote for Perry is in the runoff if Debra doesn’t make it into the top 2... not in the March primary.
What folks need to remember is that KBH can’t win the nomination unless she gets a majority of the vote no matter how the remaining votes between Perry and Medina on March 2nd are divided. In other words, if your main concern on March 2nd is to make sure Kay doesn’t win then it is mathematically immaterial whether the remaining vote between Perry/Medina is divided 90/10, 60/40, or 50/50. As long as Perry and Medina’s vote combined equals 50%+1 of the votes cast there still has to be a runoff in order for KBH to win.
In other words, for those most concerned about a KBH victory, there is essentially ZERO RISK in voting for Debra Medina on March 2nd if she is your first choice for governor. If Medina ends up finishing 3rd on March 2nd (like most now assume she will), then you vote for Perry in the runoff (which you would have had to do anyway).
At last! Someone with memory. We shouldn't forget his mandate on Giardasil either.
I do not support Perry, but I will vote for him because Hutchison is even worse and because Medina doesnt have the experience....
Agreed, but I will not vote for Perry. Gov. Goodhair and KBH are both RINO's. I like Medina's message, but as you mentioned, she doesn't have the experience (but then again, neither does the current denizen of the WH). I think Medina would be better in the Legislature, where she could push her platform.
Lucky you- property taxes in Bandera County were raised, thanks to the county commissioners.
Well since I’m in TX not MA I’m aware of TX candidates not MA candidates and therefore can’t comment on his background. That’s for the folks in MA to decide not those of us in Gods Country.
We find ourselves in a difficult position in this governor’s race. If it were only a different year . . . but it’s not.
This election determines who oversees redistricting as a result of the 2010 Census numbers. Recall the circus that has taken place in Austin during past redistrictings. It takes a hardened pol to twist arms and control the legislature.
It is critical for our nation that redistricting be done right so that Congress in Washington is properly representative of the public. If the Dems in Austin are able to bulldoze their way into controlling district lines and gerrymandering to increase Democrats representing Texas, it will be bad for the entire country.
And a weak governor will help them do it.
I don’t trust K Bailey, not at all. Medina simply doesn’t have the experience to do the job. Perry is crooked, but he also knows how to look out for himself, and he has fought the redistricting battle before.
Again, I see redistricting as critical to saving our country. Therefore, I will vote for Perry. Just using him to achieve higher goals.
Medina came, she saw, she conquered. I’m onboard and staying with the plan to replace all incumbents in elected office. Lucky to have such a strong leader as contender for TX governor.
I just sent her $100. Let’s get behind her and see what she can do...she’s a fighter. Let’s roll.
“I just sent her $100. Lets get behind her and see what she can do...shes a fighter. Lets roll.”
Right On, I am all for supporting any candidate that will stand up for the Constitution/Liberty no matter what State they might be running in
“Romneys machinery is doing all it can to spin and spin TX poll. He has invested too much in Hutchinson.”
Could you please tell me how Romney is involved in this race? That is the first I heard of that...
I am not questioning your honesty, I am just curious and looking for information. Are you saying Romney’s crew is for KBH? I heard over the weekend that he was financially backing Brown in Mass, but that is the first I heard he had a hand in our TX gov race.
