Port Authority police arrest Haisong Jiang in weekend (caused chaos at Newark Airport)
DAILY NEWS ^ | Saturday, January 9th 2010, 2:29 AM | BY Alison Gendar, Joe Jackson AND Leo Standora

Rutgers University student Haisong Jiang, 28, admitted he was the man caught on security cameras walking down a security checkpoint exit lane into the secure area, Port Authority police said.

Jiang said, "You got me," when Port Authority cops nabbed him at his Piscataway, N.J., home. He's accused of defiant trespass but could face more charges, cops said.

Security video shows Jiang loitering around a supposedly secure exit on Sunday manned by a Transportation Security Administration guard in the terminal for several minutes.

When the guard steps away from his post, Jiang scoots under a security rope to join his girlfriend.

The two lovebirds then can be seen hot-footing it, arm-in-arm, into the secure part of the terminal.

The breach delayed more than 100 flights, stranded thousands of passengers and closed the terminal for more than seven hours.

Friends said Jiang, who came to the U.S. from China in 2004, is in a doctorate molecular bioscience program at Rutgers and had never been in trouble with the law.

Police said it looks like Jiang meant no harm and only wanted to follow his girl to a secure part of the concourse to say goodbye.

A neighbor, Gene Wells, 53, said he felt some sympathy for Jiang, who lives with a group of students.

"He's not a terrorist - he just did something stupid," Wells said.

Port Authority police said a team of six detectives tracked down Jiang by checking surveillance tapes, plane manifests and photos of license plates in airport parking lots, and interviewing possible witnesses.

"Old fashioned police work found him. Nothing glamorous about the search, just old-fashioned shoe leather," the source said.

The air-headed TSA guard who left his post was identified as Ruben Hernandez. He reportedly is on administrative leave and faces possible disciplinary action.

Hisung Jiang is escorted from Newark Airport's Police Building.

I would love to see him booted ....deported
Here is an educated foreigner who disrupted the lives and Christmas plans of thousands
There are hundreds who would like to beat the crap out of him

I was betting it was an immigrant who did this
This guy is a visiting student probably getting a free education at Rutgers (he is a graduate student in biology) to bring back to China
Sometimes I think every foreigner who comes here comes only to take take take and screw around with this country
That they all think the natives are naive idiots
Easy marks

Only in the US would the main lead in from wire services report, with respect to a security breach at a US airport during a particularly tense time, that a "New Jersey man" was arrested.

This just shows how ridiculously open we are in our over-inclusivity mentality.

If American in Tokyo did the same illegal thing at Narita Airport in Japan, they would not say in the Japanese press here that "a Tokyo man was arrested", same in/with many other countries. They have some concept as to who is a citizen on their soil and who isn't. There seems to be no such concept in the United States. I have even heard of ILLEGAL ALIENS referred to as "Americans" just because they are on our soil.

A. This suspect is not even a United States Citizen.

B. He happens to reside in New Jersey while on a student visa.

C. He is a citizen of the Peoples Republic of China.

The news leads need to read that "A Chinese man was arrested" for last week's security breach in Newark.

I have seen stories of some Americans who had even given up their citizenship in younger years and were fully citizens of another country, and did some kind of international crime, and were still referred to in the US press as "US citizens".

Why cannot they get the facts right here? This is the oddest thing about the US press when viewed from afar.

I agree completely. This Chinese student living here on US beneficence and had the nerve to ruin Christmas travel plans for thousands. To see some real dumb comments read the 24 comments for this story. Nearly all cut him slack and ignore how much he screwed up other people’s lives that day

Never mind the TSA security agent who left his post! Damn people, get a grip!

We have TSA agents asleep at their posts pictued by passengers coming off planes , at DFW a security post was left unattended for up to two hours and all we can bitch about is what this dolt did to interrupt some holiday travel plans?

True we should do exactly what the law requires for his actions but let’s make sure the main reason it happened in the first place was because a nimrod posing as a professional security agent had to take a powder and his superiors couldn’t be bothered to make sure a backup was available and ready to act if, God forbid, the agent was doing his job and had a stroke while manning his post.

At the arriving passenger exit poit at JAX, I have never seen any less than two agents manning the exit hallway access. Additionally, the airport police have a manned station there as well.

True. The reason there are security guards there is to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening. Jiang is the proximate cause, but FAILED SECURITY is the real cause for all of this. The guard who left his post must be held responsible for all the ensuing trouble. He, or she (lest I be uninclusive) should suffer at least the same fate as the guy who slipped through. Once that happens, perhaps airport security people will start taking their jobs more seriously.

The fault is still with the TSA security. If one of these guys had to step away someone else should have covered for him.

Just because our leader, Obama the Timid, is a naive idiot doesn't mean that we all are. :-)

We will know more about this man than we will about Obamao.

Lautenberg wants to scapegoat this man to divert attention from the extremely incompetent procedures at the airport.

Hundreds of millions of dollars spent on Homeland Security and we find out there is no film in the surveillance cameras.

Good going, Newark Liberty.

Do you have anything to say to the thousands who were delayed for up to seven hours and missed flights because of this Chinese student asshole?
How would you feel if your wife children or parents missed Christmas dinner with you because of him?

You blame it all on TSA and bitch about the TSA?

It’s not as if you or I would have ever done what he did.

He was caught because there was film (or the equivalent) in the surveillance cameras
How do you think he was tracked?

I’m blaming TSA 25% and this imported wise guy 75%.
If its up to me he gets deported after serving felony prison time and fined thousands of dollars
This punishment is for disobeying TSA but mostly for effing up Christmas for thousands of delayed air passengers. That’s his biggest crime. Just so he could see his girlfriend 20 minutes sooner he effed up Christmas for thousands

The guy had the desire and the will but the TSA, in its failure to do its job, actually, in its dereliction of duty, threw open the doors of opportunity. Had TSA been doing its job, the incident wouldn't have occurred. TSA is way, WAY more responsible than 25% since it failed 100% in its assigned duty.

Yeah TSA is jagoffs and dupes but we are stuck with them for time being.
This guy should get reamed out...tossed in prison...then booted out on the next airplane or banana boat back to ChiCom land

Just watch all the bleeding hearts because he's a foreign student.
He's here since 2004...Is he ever going home?
If he wants to stay here why is he being a wise guy at airports and screwing up flight plans for thousands? I wonder how much jet fuel was wasted in the air waiting for Newark airport to re-open?

You rather blame some American idiots in TSA then blame some foreign dude who is availing himself of our graduate schools. So who is smart enough to know what’s going on

****** The TSA agent told him to get behind the cordon and obey regs
****** Then when the TSA agent got on his cell phone the Chinese guy snuck under to get to his girlfriend
******* TSA guy assumed Chinese asshole would obey just like you and I would

So you are mistaken

My thoughts exactly. Yes, this guy did something stupid, but what does this say about REAL security in our airports? How much time and money was spent to catch this guy who, in reality, didn’t even do anything? TSA is at fault here, not this idiot.

The surveillance camera belonged to Continental.

The airport camera had NO film.

Get informed.
