Tehran will cease cooperation with the British Museum in London until it loans the Cyrus the Great Cylinder to the National Museum of Iran.

The clay cylinder is inscribed in Babylonian cuneiform with an account by Cyrus II, king of Persia (559-530 BC). The Cyrus Cylinder is described as the world's first charter of human rights. .......

Iranian officials called on the British Museum to loan the country's ancient cylinder,.....

said Hamid Baqaei

“If the British Museum continues to make excuses for not loaning the artifact to the National Museum, we will, unfortunately, cease any cooperation with them, including archaeological expeditions and research,” he added.

Do you remember what the Taliban did to a statue of Buddah in Iraq?

My concern & obviously of others is that the current "threatened" government in Iran would decide to destroy this artifact if the English allowed it to be placed "on loan" to the museum there.

The report coming out of England today is that they will not cooperate with the request.

The cylinder is Persian in origin, which means it predates Islam in Iran by thousands of years.

I think English caution is worthy of respect.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrus_cylinder

The Cyrus cylinder has been called "the world's first declaration of human rights" by some scholars...

On October 14, 1971 the United Nations Secretary General U Thant was presented with a replica of the cylinder. The Secretary General accepted the gift, linking the cylinder with the efforts of the United Nations General Assembly to address "the question of Respect for Human Rights in Armed Conflict". Since then the replica cylinder has been kept at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on the second floor hallway

..

The Cyrus cylinder, also known as the Cyrus the Great cylinder, is a document issued by the Persian ruler Cyrus the Great in the form of a clay cylinder inscribed in Akkadian cuneiform script.[1] The cylinder was created following the Persian conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, when Cyrus overthrew the Babylonian king Nabonidus and replaced him as ruler, ending the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The text of the cylinder denounces Nabonidus as impious and portrays the victorious Cyrus as pleasing to the chief Babylonian god Marduk. It goes on to describe how Cyrus had improved the lives of the citizens of Babylonia, repatriated displaced peoples and restored temples and cult sanctuaries.

The cylinder was discovered in 1879 by the Assyro-British archaeologist Hormuzd Rassam in the foundations of the Esagila, the main temple of Babylon, where it had been placed as a foundation deposit. It is today kept in the British Museum in London.[1] There have been reports of attempts by the directors of the British Museum and the National Museum of Iran in Tehran to arrange a loan of the Cyrus Cylinder to be temporarily displayed in the National Museum of Iran for a special exhibition.[2]

I have a good idea: The British give the cylinder to Israel and then Iran might quit talking about nuking them off the map.

Hmmm...I believe there is an ulterior motive behind wanting the relic. I feel like the govt of Iran will use it to further their ideology in one direction or the other...

In 539 B.C., having conquered Babylon, the benevolent King Cyrus freed the Jews from captivity and empowered them to return to the Promised Land and build their temple.

For his acts of kindness, Cyrus the Great is immortalized in the Bible in several passages and is called “the anointed of the Lord.” The Jews, throughout recorded history, looked to Cyrus’ people, the Iranians, as their friends and protectors against oppressors such as the Seleucids and the Romans.

..

Cyrus is mentioned 32 times in the Hebrew bible.

That means not only Jews but Christians see the significance of his contribution.

Persia is no longer caller Persia for a reason.

Their culture was at it’s peak about 2500 years ago.

I have no Persian or Iranian heritage. But I admire all people who believe in self government. That only works with a moral people. Our example is one of a kind here in the US, but Cyrus was know of by the founding fathers and there is evidence that they patterned some of our Constitution after principles of Cyrus.

This is just a clay cylinder, but the idea of a government defined in writing is unheard of at the time it was made.

I do not watch TV. Your references to Miley Cyrus misses me totally.

I have a vague idea who she is, but am as indifferent toward her as you obviously are toward the Cyrus Cylinder.

Sorry.

You are correct, the English are not that dumb.

The Mullah’s only intend to destroy this, it is a symbol of a rich culture that is still revered in Iran. And a symbol of some of the opposition, which is intent on removing the Despots who run the country.

Eventually the Iranians will kick out the Mullah’s and the Arab dominance. It is not just Persians, but an extreme majority of the public who want to be free.

This has never been forgotten by the Jews (I am told) nor the Iranians (personal communications, and have read on FR over the years).

They shouldn't, as noted on this thread. And IMHO (based on "communications" with Iranians here and elsewhere) the current rulers are not likely to remain for much longer.

I totally agree. It is coming. When it happens, lets pray that it is an improvement. It is likely that it will be. Also likely to be bloody with pay back, that is long over due.

Mullahs are a totally discredited authority there.
