DEVELOPING: St. Louis police have responded to the scene of a workplace shooting at a power company where at least three people have been shot.
A man reportedly entered ABB Power at about at 6:30 a.m. with a large assault rifle, police said. Nearly an hour-and-a-half later, police believed the gunman was still in the building.
Details about the victims and their conditions were not immediately known. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports at least one shooting victim is presumed dead.
Gunman opens fire at North Side power company
A gunman armed with an assault rifle stormed a power company this morning in north St. Louis, shooting at least one person. Some employees at the business ran to the rooftop to escape the gunfire. At least one man barricaded himself in a maintenance room.
The gunman was believed to be still in the building as of 7 a.m. and details provided by police spokeswoman Schron Jackson were sketchy. But reports by dispatchers said that the company was ABB Power, at 4350 Semple Avenue.
Police had a staging area at Bircher and Semple.
About 6:30 a.m. today, police got a call from a woman, very upset, who said that someone came in to the east side of the building and started shooting. "They are still shooting," a dispatcher told police officers rushing to the scene at 6:34 a.m.
The gunman was described only as a black man, about 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9, wearing a tan coat and carrying a semiautomatic weapon.
Another employee on the phone with police said multiple shots were being fired at the east annex of the building. One man was shot in the leg at the east annex.
One caller and other employees were on the roof while talking to police.
"The subject is now outside still shooting," a dispatcher said. ...
Gaaaah.
Semiautomatic weapons by definition are NOT assault weapons!
ABB Ink plant, 4 casualties so far.
The Fox news briefing on the radio just now mentioned people being shot by an AK47. I had a vision of an out-of-control weapon rampaging through a building.
It reminded me of Rush’s rants on newscasts that talk about SUVs causing accidents, as if there was no driver involved.
Sad to see this.. these occurance are becoming more common everyday as people’s circumstances are becoming more dire. Thanks to the economy and massive job losses, people are starting to resort to desperate tactics to take care of their families and/or have had enough and are resorting to violence to release their anger. THis country is at its boiliing point and the pressure is ready to explode
I wonder if the coworkers were kept defensless by ABB or if they are allowed to protect themselves by concealed carry.
I agree.
We are witness to a redux 1850s “Bloody Kansas” run up to the Second U.S. Civil War.
They have I-70 completely shut down due to this. (I-70 sits right next to it.)
at least 3 shot (condition of victims unknown)
gunman still on the loose
at least 5 shot - 1 conformed dead
It is a very large building - police are trying to clear it now
Gunman still on the loose - there may be other victims inside the building.
conformed = confirmed
Not sure why- but ealier they were letting the video go live while the SWAT team was going into the building. They helped a man come out- didn’t appear to be injured- but was in shirtsleeves- must have been freezing.
FOX reporting 3 shot- you’re probably getting better info locally.
The place is massive in size...
It will take them quite a while to go through the whole building.
They have ambulances (many) waiting at a hold area (one reporter is there at the hold area).
I not sure if there was a 3rd working or not - but it took LE a while to get on scene because of the heavy snow fall we had over night. The shooter could have been in there for quite some time killing people before LE showed up.
I am not sure if there was a 3rd shift working or not.
Swiss-based ABB Group makes power transmission and industrial automation equipment. The company manufactures transformers in St. Louis.
Just saw the aerial shots- yikes the place is huge.
Confirming one dead.
hostage team has been called in and they are now on the scene. They believe the shooter is still in the building per KSDK.
Shooter is an employee of the company.
Shift began at 6:30am - shooting started at 6:30am - est. of 40 to 50 people on the complex at time of shootings.
