The U.S. National Nuclear Security Agency might significantly shrink the size of the secured area used for handling weapon-grade uranium within the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported Wednesday (see GSN, Feb. 17). The "Protected Area" now takes up 150 acres of the complex's total 810 acreage. While the matter remains under consideration, the NNSA proposal would cut its size to 70 acres, according to agency spokesman Steven Wyatt. A smaller security zone would make cleanup initiatives at Y-12 more both manageable and less expensive, as workers would not need special clearance for the projects.
