:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
Al Qaeda’s Yemen Connection, America and the Global Islamic Jihad

December 30, 2009 — The attempt to destroy Northwest Airlines flight 253 en route from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day underscores the growing ambition of al Qaeda's Yemen franchise, which has grown from a largely Yemeni agenda to become a player in the global Islamic jihad in the last year. Since merging with the al Qaeda franchise in Saudi Arabia last January and renaming itself Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), it has stepped up operations in Yemen itself, struck into Saudi Arabia, and now operates on the global stage. The weak Yemeni government of President Ali Abdallah Salih, which has never fully controlled the country and now faces a host of growing problems, will need significant American support to defeat AQAP.

Al Qaeda has long been active in Yemen, the original homeland of Osama bin Laden's family, and one of its first major terror attacks was conducted in Aden in 2000, when an al Qaeda cell nearly sank the USS Cole. A year ago, the al Qaeda franchises in Saudi Arabia and Yemen merged after the Saudi branch had been effectively repressed by the Saudi authorities under the leadership of Deputy Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Nayif. The new AQAP showed its claws last August, when it almost assassinated the prince with a suicide bomber who had passed through at least two airports on the way to his attempt on Nayif.

(snip)

The attack on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight also shows that al Qaeda remains obsessed with striking the American airline industry, a target it has gone after repeatedly since 1999. If AQAP has now been told by the al Qaeda core leadership to take on the job, we can probably assume that other al Qaeda franchises in North Africa, Iraq, Southeast Asia and elsewhere have also been pressed to attack.

Logan is a hotbed of islamic ground crews. They have access to everything from maintenance to food service and baggage.
This is known. No one does anything about it.

Sadly, this country continues to allow these people to gradually take over jobs that give them access to things they are planning to destroy - dumb!

Israeli Defense Update
Delivery to Israel of GBU-39s and 28s (both bunker busters meant for use against Iran’s nuke and missile sites) is complete. The F-15I will be the primary aircraft in preemptive strikes on Iran and is the only platform in Israel’s inventory that can deliver the GBU-28.

The IDF has ramped up training of air crews and some security/defense enhancements at Dimona (Israel’s nuke center) have been detected. Civil defense training has been increased all over Israel. Israel has also deployed a submarine and a remarkable new intelligence and attack RPV (Remotely Piloted Vessel) called the “Death Shark” to the Persian Gulf, which can be used for many missions including destroying Iran’s mini-subs, which they purchased from North Korea.

Israel believes Iran will field a deployable nuclear warhead this year. They will not allow that warhead to be fielded.

An OP ED piece for the Sunday Times typically is a short concise overview -- an OP ED is not investigative journalism; the author of this OP ED was responsible for keeping this Thread Matrix going for many years, and he is the person who did most of the HTML work at the beginnings of each of the dozens of threads threough the years.

The New York Times is VERY selective in what it publishes for OP EDs and obviously it was very interested in this extremely well written piece by experts with the Brookings Institute.

This is obviously a problem for the “lists” as well.

Based on the reports that are publicly available, it is not entirely clear who all of the 11 former Guantánamo detainees on the Saudi list are. Al Shihri and his fellow member of al Qaeda in Yemen, Abu Hareth Muhammad al Awfi, are two of the former Guantanamo detainees on the list. The Long War Journal has contacted the Saudi Press Agency, which published the list of 85 most-wanted terrorists and is one of the Saudi regime’s official media outlets, in order to find out who the other 9 former Guantánamo detainees are. As of this writing, The Long War Journal has not yet received a reply.

The Long War Journal has identified 8 men on the most-wanted list who have the same name as Saudis who were repatriated from Guantánamo. This matching process is not perfect, as some of the men listed have common Muslim and tribal names. Translations of the men’s names are not consistent either, as there are multiple ways to translate their Arabic names into English.

I agree, I find the situation in Yemen to be frightening and frankly have for many years.

The other night I heard several talking heads on BBC radio saying that the area in question in HUGE, and has NO infrastructure, none. They didn't mean it had poor infrastructure or little infrastructure -- they repetitively said there was NO infrastructure whatsoever, not even a road.

I mean... I'm sure that the al Quaedans must have cell phones and perhaps there are satellite dishes for some online broadband --- but essentially this huge area is stark wild --- thus the inhabitants live in very primative, very old fashioned conditions.

Have you ever seen pictures of the capitol, Saana?

The Smithsonian did a spread sometime last decade -- it is really gorgeous, the traditional building style is beautiful.

I wonder if there is any airport in America which is not filled with muslim immigrant workers -- one sees freepers from all over the country mention that both the TAXICAB industries and most of the airport jobs are held down by a majority of muslim immigrants.

I suppose there are no figures anywhere about this, right?

I wish that the speed of that tickey-tockey would increase substantially.

I do know that the MSM is simply utterly inferior; but I've never seen such a dirth of articles as with the recent crisis in Iran.

I'm just amazed that there's so little available, and whatever there is, doesn't seem to get updated.

For instance, as of late last night there still wasn't any confirmation of whether the report from the opposition about the army coming into Tehran was accurate, and thus we have no idea if the initial report was in any way accurate.

I am getting worried that No News is... bad news....

This story bears repeating and warning for future air travelers - if there are that many onboard it will be hard to stop them.

AirTran Dec. 4th

and here... http://bit.ly/88EfFM

AirTran says this man wasn’t on-board??

AirTran Airways says a flight from Atlanta to Houston with more than 70 passengers on board was delayed when a passenger refused to end a cell phone call.

AirTran spokesman Christopher White told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Flight 297, a Boeing 717, was taxiing on the runway in Atlanta Tuesday afternoon when a crew member asked a passenger to turn off his phone.

White says that after several failed attempts by the crew member to end the conversation, the captain returned the plane to the gate.

White says the passenger complied when he was asked to get off the plane. He says no charges were filed, and that the plane departed for Houston 2 ½ hours later.

This was MUCH more than a man with a cell phone! See this story of the TRUTH! One week ago, I went to Ohio on business and to see my father. On Tuesday, November the 17th, I returned home. If you read the papers the 18th you may have seen a blurb where a AirTran flight was cancelled from Atlanta to Houston due to a man who refused to get off of his cell phone before takeoff. It was on Fox. This was NOT what happened. I was in 1st class coming home. 11 Muslim men got on the plane in full attire. 2 sat in 1st class and the rest peppered themselves throughout the plane all the way to the back. As the plane taxied to the runway the stewardesses gave the safety spiel we are all so familiar with. At that time, one of the men got on his cell and called one of his companions in the back and proceeded to talk on the phone in Arabic very loudly and very aggressively. This took the 1st stewardess out of the picture for she repeatedly told the man that cell phones were not permit

To which one of the men said “shut up infidel dog!” She went to take the camcorder and he began to scream in her face in Arabic. At that exact moment, all 11 of them got up and started to walk the cabin. This is where I had had enough! I got up and started to the back where I heard a voice behind me from another Texan twice my size say “I got your back.” I grabbed the man who had been on the phone by the arm and said “you WILL go sit down or you Will be thrown from this plane!” As I “led” him around me to take his seat, the fellow Texan grabbed him by the back of his neck and his waist and headed out with him. I then grabbed the 2nd man and said, “You WILL do the same!” He protested but adrenaline was flowing now and he was going to go. As I escorted him forward the plane doors open and 3 TSA agents and 4 police officers entered. Me and my new Texan friend were told to cease and desist for they had this under control. I was happy to oblige actually.

There was some commotion in the back, but within moments, all 11 were escorted off the plane. They then unloaded their luggage. We talked about the occurrence and were in disbelief that it had happen, when suddenly, the door open again and on walked all 11!! Stone faced, eyes front and robotic (the only way I can describe it). The stewardess from the back had been in tears and when she saw this, she was having NONE of it! Being that I was up front, I heard and saw the whole ordeal. She told the TSA agent there was NO WAY she was staying on the plane with these men. The agent told her they had searched them and were going to go through their luggage with a fine tooth comb and that they were allowed to proceed to Houston. The captain and co-captain came out and told the agent “we and our crew will not fly this plane!” After a word or two, the entire crew, luggage in tow, left the plane. 5 minutes later, the cabin door opened again and a whole new crew walked on.

Hi again, this is such a long thread since the last time I finished reading it last night, LOL

I haven't kept current with the present POPPY HARVEST; however, I do know that BBC has featured several stories the past couple months about projects to get farmers to plant something ELSE.

For instance the last time I heard about this, they were teaching farmers in one district how to grow pistachio nuts; I think that the previous feature was about growing flowers for export. NOT poppies, but flowers for Western florists.

For a while it seemed to me that the poppy harvest was BEING PROTECTED, but nowadays not so.

I am deeply concerned that so little is available about the presence of the Chinese in Afghanistan where I understand that they send their military to protect their factories.

ALSO, the very first reports about Afghanistan in the days after 911 was that large numbers of Chinese troops were there --- HOWEVER, maybe that was because they were seen in large numbers in some commercial district containing lots of Chinese owned factories.

I simply don't know.

Boy... I am surprised that anyone who screamed, "Infidel DOG!!" at any American anywhere in America is still alive today.

Doesn't that seem peculiar?

I mean how does one flight attendant protect any person who screams about filthy infidel dogs???????

VERY curious.

I don't have any martial arts or military training, but I do have ADRENALIN..... and I don't think he could have matched me, if ya know what I mean?

No statistics that I know of because if most Americans knew how extreme the infiltration is, they would never fly anywhere ever. I don’t. I would rather drive cross country.
They are also very ensconced in our food producing industry.
One of the main reasons I was almost insanely adamant against amnesty for illegals was because of the almost never mentioned influx of illegal muslims from radical countries like Somalia, Pakistan, Kosovo, et al. This is a clear and present danger. They swarm to the islamic centers which are springing up like blades of grass all over the country, and Americans remain clueless.
This administration has made it eminently easier for these critters to enter our country by placing islamics in posts where National Security is compromised beyond our wildest dreams. They have access to classified materials that even some Generals can’t access without the materials passing through their hands first.
They hold these positions with NO oversight in the State Department, the DoD, DIA, NSC, CIA, FBI, and it goes on down through the list.
