The color code chart has been fading away for a few years. This is probably because it isn't a good idea to begin with.
So if it goes to "orange" the terrorists sit tight and wait for it to go back to "yellow." It's always yellow which equates to something like "moderate risk of terrorist attack." As if it's part of a weather forecast.
You either have effective security or you don't. Clearly the government doesn't care very much about who gets into the country.
Regardless of whether or not this guy is on a list, somebody effed up big time. He was carrying explosives and somehow got through and boarded. We should thank God Almighty that this attempt failed.

The initial report of “fireworks” was probably just a cover story they thought they could get away with. Then when it came out that it was the passengers who subdued him they had to admit it was a terror attempt.

As a traveler, I want to know if there are known threats. The traveling public should know too. Effective security includes the participation of travelers. One color all the time makes no discernment at all. They ought to raise the threat level so that the traveling public can be on alert. If it scares off terrorists, so much the better, right?

Flight 253 UPDATE: Abdul Mudallad Nigerian tried to blow up Flight 253. Mudallad’s name popped up on Terror Watch List Database, said Rep Peter King of New York on CNN today. Rep King is a ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee. Rep King said the Nigerian suspect claimed to have links with Al Qaeda and other extremist organizations. The terror suspect also divulged that the explosive device was procured in Yemen with instructions on how to use it on board.
A passenger Syed Jafri (Jafry) sitting at seat 16G on Flight 253 told CNN the suspect was sitting on 19A seat, and “he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then a young man behind me jumped on him.”
According to the Huffington Post, a passenger “tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said.” The passenger ” tried to explode powder taped to his leg with a syringe full of chemicals” according to the NY Daily News.
CNN’s War on Terror Expert Peter Bergen told CNN that Nigeria had one of the least airport security measures and the suspect may not actually be a Nigerian but some one who may have used Nigeria’s Lagos airport to bypass security measures and fly to Amsterdam on way to Detroit. Observers are calling it a grave security breach.

A Nigerian reported to be studying in Britain allegedly tried to blow up a transatlantic airliner on Christmas Day in what the White House called an attempted act of terrorism.
The suspect, claiming links to al-Qaeda, was taken into custody with burns after allegedly trying to detonate explosives on Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit.
He was identified by ABC News as
Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23,
an engineering student at University College London.
It's ironic, isn't it, that if this terrorist had succeeded in his act of terrorism against America, Ubama and his mob would be secretly cheering inside.

He was reportedly on a US intelligence “watch-list” but not on the US Government’s no-fly list.
A federal “situational awareness” bulletin said: “The subject is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used.”

The perp was admitted with 3rd degree burns. As far as I am concerned, lets kick this POS to the ER curb. He can run into the local market and get some first aid cream on his way to jail. Let him experience the full impact of his decision.
If he had been successful in his endeavor he and many other people would be dead, so why should we be concerned about a few burns. He may end up with a few scars to help him remind him of his past errors.
Thanks for the info. On US flights that make a stop, we stay on the aircraft. Of course, no customs searches between flights (yet).
My brother used the Athens airport as a great example of a smuggling route, when he was in the security business.
Still, if the creep got off the plane, even for an aircraft cleaning and a re-screening, then security should have found some signs of explosives.
Or not. Another weak link to be exploited.
