Union payback, plain and simple.

From a post of mine on the 18th of Dec:

I first heard about "in-sourcing" being done by the USAF a few days ago. Seems the USAF is taking jobs that are currently being done by a contractor and making them civilian positions. They are aggressively recruiting people away from the contractors in a manner that has been described as unethical at best. A very well-known local contractor that I am aquainted with recently lost over 100 employees in this manner within a very short period of time. In a recent speech, Gates revealed he is converting 11,000 contractors and hiring an additional 9,000 government acquisition professionals by 2015 – beginning with 4,100 in FY10.

Sure, this will save some money in the long run, but their attempts to put everyone on the goverment payroll...and subsequently in the union...are quite disconcerting, even professionals in the procurement field are stating they need to slow down and proceed with caution. Stan Soloway, CEO of the Professional Services Council stated that "Cost performance,[and] cost analysis evaluation [is]lacking" and "without appropriate analytical rigor and discipline, it could become an exorbitantly expensive undertaking that does nothing to improve the performance of government and has an unfair and undesirable effect on scores of companies and thousands of taxpayers who work for them". Public sector unions, on the other hand, are elated, as this is payback for their support of Obama.

Next on their agenda:

The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009

The bill provides that a federal employee and his or her domestic partner be entitled to benefits available to a married federal employee and his or her spouse. Surprisingly, it was sponsored by Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Ranking Member Susan Collins (R-ME). Lieberman is a Dem, so it is expected with him, but there is no excuse for Collins.

So...not only are they going to convert jobs to the public sector and unionize those folks, they are going to expand benefits to "partners". So much for the cost savings they are trying to tout.
