Ford offers buyouts to all UAW workers Photo 3:27pm EST
DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said Monday it is offering its 41,000 U.S. factory workers buyouts and early retirement offers in a bid to reduce its payroll costs as it aims to return to profit by 2011.
The buyouts mark the second round of such offers for Ford workers represented by the United Auto Workers union. About 1,000 workers took offers to leave the automaker in July.
Ford workers have until late January to accept the offers, which include payouts of up to $70,000 cash for newer hires to $60,000 cash for veterans already eligible for retirement.
"Despite a strengthening in our business, we still have a surplus in employees," said Ford spokesman Mark Truby.

ford to rehire them.
“Im going to become a leech.”
A lofty goal! ;-)
no
Ya but we need these taxpayers...I can't support Detroit all by myself...
Ford better be careful. The Unions have big, powerful friends.
Ditto and ditto.
What'd you have before that, Datsun, Subaru???
Didn’t do quite that good got it at$1.94 good enough for me! And it gets better almost everyday. I love Ford I even iwn a Fusion and I love that too.
Sorry own
Well, what the union doesn't own the government does, and we all know that government does not shed employees. They may "discontinue" a department or program with a wink and move the employees elsewhere, but they never simply reduce employees.
The UAW put Toyota where they are.
I will gladly have FORD at the top of my buying list if they get rid of all the union workers.
Screw the unions, and screw Government Motors...they are part of the death knell of liberty in the 21st century.
Ford ought to do a lockout rather than a buyout.
Henry Ford would have been pleased with his car company today.
which include payouts of up to $70,000 cash for newer hires to $60,000 cash for veterans already eligible for retirementThis isn't fair. Maybe these guys can't sleep at home for some reason.
Well maybe Detroit could be hit just enough so there votes don't drown out the conservative votes in the rest of state and then they could vote out the liberal wasteful spending and taxing you folks into the dark ages, and turn the state into a right to work state but I think that is going to take a long time in Michigan.
Wow.
Careful friend. The free trade Inquisition will see your post and accuse you of heresy /sarcasm
The US Postal Service offered early retirement this year. The buyouts were only $15000, but they had about 30000 takers nationwide. We’ve gone from 700,000 employees to about 575,000 in 3 years through attrition and early retirement, and still lost 1.9b last FY. More cuts to come - management cuts are in the pipeline now.
