As the Senate health care debate enters crunch time, the pressure from all sides continued to grow today, with Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., right in the middle.
His spokesman quickly dismissed a report by conservative columnist Michelle Malkin that Nelson was even being threatened with closure of an air force base, presumably Offutt Air Force Base, which is south of Omaha and home of U.S. Strategic Command. Malkin also said Nelson has been promised a bribe bigger than Sen. Landrieu's.
That's a reference to Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat and one of the last holdouts on the vote to begin the health care debate. The legislation includes a provision to increase Louisiana's Medicaid funds that Landrieu says is worth $300 million.
Nelson spokesman Jake Thompson said both of Malkin's claims about Nelson are false.
The rumor is not true, Thompson said. This misinformation is coming from inside-the-Beltway partisans who only want to derail health care reform.

He doesn’t care, you’re right. I think he has complete contempt for America and the American people. It’s actually commonplace among Marxists to despise the “people” they are always clamoring on about helping.
When he got elected I said I thought the next 4 years would be a good test of whether our nation is ultimately immune to communist takeover—and we are really being tested now, with institutions that were established with checks and balances against autocratic manipulation built in (like the BRAC process) now teetering.
It comes down to either the rule of law or the rule of man—and man is beginning to usurp law here. It’s not good. 2010 and 2012 might be the last chance we have to restore America.
“There was frustration and angst,” Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., a leading liberal, said after the meeting at the White House. “Everybody has things they want, and they didn’t all get what they want and that includes me, big-time.”
But Obama got their attention, said Rockefeller, describing a health care remake to cover tens of millions now uninsured as “the biggest thing since Social Security.”
“It’s hard to ignore that,” Rockefeller said.
Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., a moderate who had been on the fence, said Tuesday night it’s time to pass the bill.

What is it that you want them to do?
monkeyshine!
GOOD to see you, too!!!!
Of course there is. But two issues are 1) prove that it was a bribe and 2) prove that it happened. A room full of 100 witnesses will say there was no bribe. And the “documents” will show that the Air Force had considered closing the base for a long time... These guys are pros. There are a few dumbbutts who get caught with cash in the freezer or getting a free home addition built... but for the most part they know how to “work it”.
Read randita’s post #58. These ‘deals’ are what grease the wheels. Always have and always will. It’s their control of resources that corrupts them thoroughly.
The reporter from the Weekly Standard who broke the story said that Nelson had to deny the threat. The reporter, Mike, was on Glenn Becks radio show and said he was 100% sure the story is TRUE.
I don't think "Corrupt" is quite the right word. The Teapot Dome Scandal, or Billy Sol Estes, or even Bill and Hillery were examples of classic hand in the cookie jar corruption. These folks are after power, lots of it, and are willing to do whatever they pull off to get it. IOW, it's not money they are after, although to be sure they want your money too, it's power they are really after, raw power.
Theoretically true, but he can "downsize" the snot out of it. He can also have it put ON The List (BRAC list), and he can be very persuasive in the arguments for closing it. (See we're not using it very much anymore, since we consolidate that command into one over in Congressman Murtha's district)
I’m not going to slap the GOP when they do what the people want - it’s like raising a child, if you ever praise them for doing right and only punish for bad, that’s not good parenting.
It isn’t often I say the GOP as a whole has done well but it would be dishonest if we said the GOP on some key votes and other actions have not done exactly what we’ve been screaming for at the Tea Parties.
Inhofe keeping the GOP together and not showing up for Babs Boxer’s vote on Crap-n-Trade comes to mind.
No votes for Tarp II
The 8 who voted for Crap and Trade in the House, they are being strongly targeted and should be; the rest held together.
One RINO voted for health care in the House and Cho needs to Go for that ONE vote. I was betting at least 9 would vote for it.
Give credit where it’s due - BUT if they want their jobs they’d better put their voting record up against Conservatives who want their seats and let the BEST Patriot win (That won’t leave too many incumbents)
Hopefully, Articles of Impeachment are being drawn as we speak?
I know what you are saying... BUT they are not really listening to us, as can be told by the canned statements and responses everyone still gets, they are doing nothing more than is required to get back into office.
If they are truly serious then REALLY "get it on" in this fight, as of now the GOP is doing nothing but whining and dragging a lot of this stuff along to, dare I say, Whip Up The Base,in an attempt to get re-elected.
When they truly start to "Protect and Defend" I will be there on their side feeding them carrots all day long, until then, they get the stick and a lot of it... ;-)
If everyone gets out of the boxes they have placed us in, we can get out of this mess. No more lies, no more "promises", no more bending and twisting the law,no more violating the constitution after taking an Oath not to... No More Status Quo.
If the GOP starts sprouting a spine they might have a chance at survival in the upcoming elections.
I agree with everything you say except “corrupt” fits everything you describe when you add in EVIL with it.

Not by anyone holding office today... I just cannot see enough testosterone in the House to do it... but come November 2010...

A pro-impeachment position would seem to be a great issue for a conservative to run for Congress on, would it not?
Without a doubt my FRiend!

Re: threat to close base
Now being widely reported I hope ...
