Unfortunately, in mainstream secular Jewish thought Antiochus gets turned into a "bigoted Southern Baptist preacher" and the Maccabees become a forerunner of the American Civil Liberties Union fighting for the right of all people to believe whatever they want to because there is no one true religion.
Then you have the fact that Chanukkah is so associated with Xmas in the American (and American secular Jewish) mentality, so that Xmas is made to represent "benighted faith" and Chanukkah enlightened skepticism. This is the exact opposite of what the festival is really about.
