On Saturday, Sen. Mary Landrieu, political commentator James Carville and a committee of prominent Democrats will host a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada at the home of David Voelker, chairman of the Louisiana Recovery Authority.
Tickets to the affair start at $1,000 and escalate to $4,800 for co-hosts supporting Reid, who is locked in a bitter re-election campaign for 2010 and raising money in the districts of his Democratic Senate colleagues nationwide.
When he visits New Orleans, political donors as well as Tea Party activists from throughout Louisiana will greet him. They have labeled their rally A Streetcar Named Retire in honor of Reid. They plan to gather in front of Voelkers St. Charles Avenue home and protest, singing specially designed Christmas carols in honor of Landrieu and Reid.
Landrieu has been the target of criticism from conservative groups throughout the state since her controversial cloture vote allowing the Senate health care bill to move forward in the legislative process. But the criticism pales in comparison with the vocal opposition against congressional leaders such as Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Having Harry Reid in the state is an opportunity that we cannot pass up, said Robin Edwards of the Louisiana Tea Party Federation.
