The Mystery of Harry Reid

How could such a thoroughly unappealing man have gotten so far in politics?

By JAMES TARANTO

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is at it again. FoxNews.com reports on his latest utterance in the debate over ObamaCare:

Reid argued that Republicans are using the same stalling tactics employed in the pre-Civil War era.
"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right," Reid said Monday. "When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.' "
He continued: "When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn't quite right.
"When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today."

There is little to say about the substance of this, other than to observe that he forgot to mention the Holocaust. But as a matter of form, Reid's statement is so bad as to be interesting.

Most obviously, someone who lashes out in such a clumsy and vicious way is not someone who feels confident that he will prevail. It's hard to imagine what Reid could be hoping to accomplish, other than perhaps rallying the Democratic left with a little partisan hate speech.

Yes Harry Reid is correct on this but he forgot to mention that those senators were democrats not republican. The civil rights act passed with a majority of the Republicans in a Congress that was controlled by the Democrats. Few Republicans voted against the act. Many Democrats did vote against the act.

Nevada senator's family excels in lucrative ties
By Chuck Neubauer and Richard Cooper
LA TIMES SERIES, Part One, Jul 6, 2003, pg. 4.A

FAMILY TIES: Abstract (Document Summary) Reid's sons -- Rory, 40, Leif, 35, Josh, 31, and Key, 28 -- work for Nevada's largest law firm, Lionel Sawyer Collins. Rory Reid is a partner in the firm and was a Nevada lobbyist before his election to the Clark County Board of Commissioners in November. Leif Reid is a litigator who has represented mining and resort industry associations in Nevada.

Key Reid was hired to open the firm's Washington office in 2002 and help lead its federal lobbying effort with former Sen. Richard H. Bryan, D-Nev., who splits his time between the capital and Nevada. [Steven Barringer], 47, and married to the senator's daughter, Lana, is a lawyer, federal lobbyist and partner in the small Washington-based lobbying firm of McClure, Gerard and Neuenschwander.

Washington lobbying firms must file reports twice a year that disclose their clients and the names of the people representing them. Those reports show that, between them, Barringer and Key Reid have represented nearly every major industry in Nevada, from mining and real estate evelopment to tourism and gambling to the city of Las Vegas. All of those clients rely on the senator's goodwill on Capitol Hill.

Reid is the Senate's minority whip, the chamber's second-highest Democratic leader. He is also a senior member of the Appropriations Committee and the Environment and Public Works Committee.

As somebody who has seen Las Vegas/Nevada politics up close, my only answer would be:

A venal personality, ruthlessness, blackmail and a willingness to say anything to avoid having to lose.

Harry is unlikable even to his ‘friends’ (of which he actually has very few). His willingness to punish those who don’t support him or those who might seek to threaten his reign are almost legendary.

He also has three adult sons - all lawyer/lobbyists. He has groomed the oldest one who will be on the ticket as the Dem Gov Nominee in Nov right alongside dear ol’ dad.

He has bribed, blackmailed or simply promised to bribe or blackmail every friend and every friend of his opponents. There are lots of prominent Republicans who will not publicly stand up against him because if he wins Harry will use his position to kill their businesses. But if you are willing to play ball he is willing to hand you government largess to betray what other principles you have (or...had).

Kill two Reids with one ballot - like shooting fish in a barrel.

You know how they say “the good die young”? With Reid, they are far too accurate. If they ever announce this guy is seriously ill, I don’t believe I would pray for this sumbeesh’s recovery.
