Honduras' Zelaya to stay in Brazil embassy
Reuters Via Yahoo News ^ | 12/06/2009 | Reuters

Honduras' deposed President Manuel Zelaya said on Sunday that he would stay in the Brazilian embassy in the Honduran capital for as long as Brasilia allowed him to and that he would be willing to talk to the new president-elect.

Leftist Zelaya, who was ousted by the army in a coup on June 28, slipped back into Honduras in September and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, from where he has been demanding his reinstatement.

The United States and Brazil have been pushing for Zelaya's return to power but his fate remains uncertain after the Honduran Congress voted on Wednesday not to allow him to finish his term that ends in January.

"As long as I have Brazil's support, I will be here," Zelaya told Reuters by telephone from the embassy, which is ringed by Honduran soldiers around the clock.

Opposition candidate Porfirio Lobo won a presidential vote last weekend and could allow Honduras, which is suffering from an aid freeze following the coup, to overcome the five-month crisis.

Regional power Brazil has said it does not recognize the election because it was organized by the de-facto government. But it signaled late on Friday it may consider Lobo's victory as separate from the coup and potentially legitimate.

Zelaya has also rejected the elections as a sham, but told Reuters he did not rule out talking to Lobo, a sign that he too may be willing to compromise.

"I am a democrat ... I always talk," he said when asked about holding talks with Lobo.

I’m sure he is staying in the Embassy till his friends in Washington find him some great digs in the States that the taxpayers will cover along with the lifestyle he has grown accustomed to.

Maybe he could do some gardening and some handyman work around the place to pay for the couch they let him sleep on.

Does this sham democrat (I mean Obama not Zelaya) believe in the “will of the people” or doesn’t he? If a referendum were held in Honduras now on Zelaya, he would be toasted toast. He has not simply defied some hoity toity rules, he is a certified cheat and nut.

I still think Sarah Palin should GO to Tegucigalpa in late January for Pepe Lobo's presidential inauguration, and take a supportive delegation of US Senators and Congressmen (they will be almost entirely GOP). This would be an UNOFFICIAL US DELEGATION--so they would not run afoul of the law--Tegucigalpa would be more than honored I am sure to extend them VIP invitations outside of the purvey of the US Embassy in Honduras, but it would give her great visibility and good quotes, and show her international leadership and embarrass OBONGO to boot for being the ass he was to begin with in supporting Zelaya's attempted Marxist July coup that backfired in his and Hugo and Fidel's faces. Priceless. I wish a lurker close to her would float this idea.

Do you or anyone know just where the Honduran Presidential inauguration ceremony occurs? Would it be in the National Assembly? In a large hall? Outside? Or at the Presidential Palace. Now THAT would be cool to get tickets to in late January. ;-)

I wonder if the “aid freeze” is still going on in Honduras...

If so, then Zelaya is just hunkering down and waiting it out. If not, then he’s just a typical deluded, power hungry wacko.
