I halfheartedly followed it. Unless there was some evidence that didn’t get to the US press I’m not in the beyond reasonable doubt camp. I wasn’t on the jury though nor in the courtroom. From what I’ve seen everything was pretty circumstantial.
NO one, so far, has actually addressed the difference between European (Napoleonic) Law and US Law. In the US, the accused is presumed innocent whereas in Europe the accused is presumed guilty and must prove innocence. It is much more difficult to prove a crime was NOT committed by you than to prove a particular individual committed the crime.
DNA evidence is fragile and if not handled properly can produce erroneous results. Just look at all the cases here in the US where people have had the DNA evidence re-examined by properly credentialed professionals with no stake in the outcome and lo and behold, they have been exonerated!
Interrogation techniques can yield false positives as well. A person under duress will say anything to make the interrogation stop. The bill of rights we have here in the US does NOT apply in Europe. They can do anything to anyone and not be held to account for any of it. Power confers right over there. Please understand that fact. The accused has no power, and therefore can never be right.
Whether Amanda Knox is actually innocent or guilty the question still remains: did she get a FAIR trial? or did the media and the Italians looking for publicity screw her over? We don’t know, do we?
The city of Perugia has benefited tremendously from this high profile trial, both financially and in propaganda. Career minded police and prosecutors love the stage and will do anything to be seen as “heroes.” This overly sensationalized trial has been a well staged international drama full of evil designed to titillate a bored audience. More bread and circuses for the masses. Just eat it up and be fat and happy. Tomorrow you could be on trial and you won’t be laughing then, I guarantee it!
