At midnight last night, the United Kingdom ceased to be a sovereign state
The Telegraph ^ | 12/1/2009 | Daniel Hannon

We woke up in a different country today. Alright, it doesn’t look very different. The trees still seem black against the winter sun; the motorways continue to jam inexplicably; commuters carry on avoiding eye contact. But Britain is no longer a sovereign nation. At midnight last night, we ceased to be an independent state, bound by international treaty to other independent states, and became instead a subordinate unit within a European state.

Yes, a European state. Take a quick dekko at the definition set out in Article One of the1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States: “The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states.”

Until yesterday, the EU qualified on grounds (a), (b) and (c). Now it has ticked the final box. Under the Lisbon Treaty, which came into force today, it acquires “legal personality”, which gives it the right to sign treaties and treat with other states. Nor is this right simply theoretical: the EU now has a foreign minister, a diplomatic corps (the European External Action Service) and 16o overseas embassies.

(snip)

Until yesterday, Britain could simply walk out of the EU by abrogating the Treaty of Rome and repealing the 1972 European Communities Act. Henceforth, it will have to go through the secession procedure laid down in Lisbon. In other words – in the minds of Euro-lawyers, at any rate, if not of British constitutionalists – the EU gets to settle the terms on which its members are allowed to leave. Formal sovereignty has been shifted from the national capitals to Brussels

The State will always fail to bring the promised utopia,
and the statists’ only solution is that the State needs to be bigger in order to succeed.

not 100% correct but anyway. to think that Britain (regardless what the Telegraph says) would be willing to leave the EU voluntary belongs in a word of fantasy.

And, the Republic for which the U.S. flag used to stand is rapidly disappearing into the anals of history as the U.S. gov’t cedes soveriegnty to the One World Gov’t of the New World Order. Interesting isn’t it that Bush “1” refered several times to the New World Order. Obviously this is a track of self destruction followed by both parties.

What Napoleon and Hitler could not do through warfare, Britain has done through stupidity.

Most, if not all, great countries die by suicide.

The United States is about to lose it's sovereignty in Copenhagen because of a lie.
This is what happens when tyranny takes over.

...it is spelled “annals”...though perhaps the stink of this sort of internationalism caused the slip...

Since this is primarily an American website, I'm going to post Abraham Lincoln's words that I think serve as a stern warning to us as we watch our British cousins give away their national sovereignty:

"At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

Actually; i do that on purpose in an attempt to inject a bit of humor into this otherwise dreary, bad-news existence. Most of course, don’t notice.

And a mere 100 years ago, Great Britain was the world's greatest empire, and one whose navy was unmatched.

Britain has gone down a far way in a short time, from a world-spanning empire to a mere cog.

If Britain decided to leave would the EU declare war on it for ceceding? Probably not, they would just go to the EU courts and tie Britain up legally.

So long Britain, we’ll still see you in the history books.

Somewhere I heard a sequence ending with the words “from Abundance to Slavery”.

This one?

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependency back again into bondage.” Sir Alex Fraser Tyler: (1742-1813) Scottish jurist and historian.

not even necessary. (britain would never want to leave anyway). this would exclude from the world biggest single market an there for would be a economical disaster for britain. this allone would stop any politician only to think about of leaving the EU.
