NEW DELHI -- As countries around the world prepare to flex their negotiating muscles at next month's climate-change summit in Copenhagen, India has begun to question the Western model of computing global warming statistics.
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh released a report last week that says there is no conclusive evidence that climate change has caused the melting of the Himalayan glaciers. The report says that not all of the glaciers are receding at alarming rates and that a few are even advancing.
The report, an analysis of data from the past four decades, is part of India's efforts to produce a body of indigenous research assessments on the subject.
"So far, we have been depending on research conducted by the West on what is happening to our glaciers and environment," he said after releasing the report, which was prepared by a former scientist with the Geological Survey of India and included a disclaimer that it did not necessarily reflect the government's view.
"There is an urgent need to have our own studies by our scientists," he said.

What is this, laying the ground work for bagging any of the Kyoto-type penalties (like China) that Western countries are trying to hang themselves with?
The Indians are going off the reservation.
global warming ping
India not going for the left wing scam.
Neither did China.
They basically told Obama to go F himself.
India tells West to stop eating beef ___
India has urged the West to give up eating beef to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming.
GO INDIA! Please tell “the West” where to shove their Global Warming.

Countries around the world giving the boot to B Hasan Mao.
Good for China. Now India needs to tell Obama the same thing.
The more I learn of India, the more I like it.
For all that it's hell to be in the underclass there.
But things can, and hopefully will, change.
Rivers depend on annual melt (like the Colorado River), not glaciers. A permanent glacier is the same as no glacier - contributes nothing. So why the fuss about glaciers melting? Enjoy the bonus melt while you have it. One day it will be gone or stop melting and you lose either way.
For the most part they've been saying the glaciers are not melting away, although a large number of them have stopped growing (but that's over a century or more).
More recently their water resources folks have reported that the waterflow from the mountains has been reduced endangering supplemental irrigation projects downstream.
It's simply not the case that the mountain glaciers are melting away ~ they simply aren't being replenished and the cause of that is not "higher temperatures" but a reduction of moisture laden air masses from the Indian Ocean.
Cooler, dryer air always means it's getting colder.
ROTFL. Good one.
Not completely true. What I mean is that the formulation of the above point is incorrect. Words like 'underclass' came from the left. The truth is that EVERYONE in India suffered due to socialism. India has realized that they were victims of socialism which was foisted on them and is rapidly moving away from it. So the second part of your above point will be fulfilled the more they embrace the free-market.
The other part about India that I like is that they have realized that all their suspicions of Americans can be traced to the Dims and India prefers that the Republican Party rules USA. Just google for this point and you will find stunning stuff - before every election, Indian media reports that the government is worried that the Dims would win! They are starting to analyze American politics instead of holding all Americans responsible for the folly and hostility of the Dims.
I have many Indian friends and colleagues. They are nice, smart, family oriented, and culturally a good fit with us conservatives.
Exactly. As usual, America will foot the bill while being the whipping boy.
The poverty in India is strong, with little children begging in the streets. But the system is changing as India embraces free markets and is helping poorer families to obtain an education.
In otherwords, the world’s largest democracy doesn’t trust Democrats......interesting.
Unfortunately the Indian community in the United States is stuck on the idea that the Democrats are pro-Indian and socially responsible.
