DeMint and Honduran Democracy 1 - Obama Administration 0
American Thinker ^ | November 15, 2009 | Clarice Feldman

In a victory for democracy in Honduras and common sense in foreign affairs, the Administration has backed off its insistence that Zelaya be returned to power:
Sen. Jim DeMint, a South Carolina Republican known for his efforts to block influence domestic immigration and health-care issues, has scored a foreign-policy coup by helping to compel the Obama administration to shift its stance on strife-ridden Honduras.

After demanding for months that deposed Honduran President Mel Zelaya be restored to power, senior State Department officials now say they'll accept the outcome of Nov. 29 elections in the Central American country even if Zelaya doesn't reclaim his post.

"We support the elections process there," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Thursday. "We have provided technical assistance. ... These elections will be important to restoring Democratic and constitutional order in Honduras."

Kudos to Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican with spine.

Amen! Looks like the circus is finally folding up its tents.

As I knew it would, so long as the Hondurans held fast. It only needed this face-saving deal to undo the damage of the Honduran military kicking Zelaya out of the country in the first place (the only real mistake).

Manuel can go back to his hacienda.

A spine and a couple of big, brass ones. I take my hat off to DeMint on this issue and Jeff Sessions on the illegal immigration issue. If only we had 98 more like these two!

In most of South and Central America, armies have civilian law enforcement duties and fulfill the role we allocate to our state police forces as well as all those federal alphabet forces. These countries can't afford the nice window dressing we have.

Obama’s tenure so far has been a string of losses and missteps. Let’s hope the trend continues.

Yeah, but will ACORN be in Honduras “helping” with the voting process?? How about the Black Panthers providing “security”? And isn’t it BIG of Hussein to permit the Honduran people to choose their president!!

I hear you...Zer0 and his thugs really stepped in it when siding with Zelaya, Chavez and the Castro's in the beginning. The Hondurans didn't fold, they stuck to there guns and I doubt they'll allow thugs to steal their election. Looks like Zer0's effort to further Marxism in the region will fail.

My pleasure - I kinda hijacked the thread; I have not been on board much lately. But, I am dismayed by the continuing decline of the post quality I see when I do get on.

Yes, I agree, this was a victory.

I wouldn’t trust Obama as far as I could throw him, though; he’s backed off, but part of this is because Hugo is heating up to attack Colombia or possibly even to interfere directly in Honduras. The thing is that we have military bases in both these countries, along with mutual defense treaties, and I think Bambi has put himself between a rock and a hard place by supporting the Communist enemies of both countries.

Because of the treaties, it wouldn’t really be possible for us to provide military support to Hugo Chavez in attacking either of these countries, and there’s not time enough to renegotiate the treaties, which I’m sure he would do if he could. I think maybe Obama realizes that he bit off more than he could chew.

The military didn’t kick him out, bu simply provided the mechanism to get him out of town.

Basically, he was either going to go to jail or be exiled, and the entire government made the mistake of thinking that letting him get out of the country, keep his ill-gotten gains (he was literally rolling bags of cash out of the Honduran treasury a few days before his exile) and not face prosecution if he didn’t return would solve a problem without bogging the country down for months while he was tried (and found guilty, since the evidence was overwhelming).

Personally, I bet we’re going to find someday that Zelaya agreed to the generous exile conditions, but was then manipulated by Hugo Chavez and Obama to be the exiled Communist poster boy.

Well said and I really hope he has realized he went too far whether it was on purpose or his naivety, I personally believe it was the former.

Find myself in lurk mode much of the time myself.

The place has changed. As has the USA.

Wonder why DeMint is rarely touted as a Republican frontrunner for Pres? He certainly has earned it.
