Democrats haven't decided yet whether to permit an amendment to their health bill on abortion, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday.
Pelosi said during her weekly press conference that she and other Democratic leaders have not decided whether or not to allow changes submitted by Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) to clarify language on federal funding for abortions.
"His work has been very important, and we haven't made any decisions about amendment," Pelosi said in her weekly press conference.
40-some pro-life Democrats, led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), have threatened to oppose the bill over concerns about the strength of provisions in the bill barring federal funds for pregnancy termination. House leaders have maintained throughout the healthcare debate, though, that the bill does not and will not allow such funding.
"Congressman Ellsworth's record in Congress and his statements outside of Congress have been strongly pro-life," Pelosi said. "He and others who have strong pro-life convictions want very much to see a healthcare bill passed."
The Speaker has been working to get to 218 votes for her bill this weekend, and the support of some or all of the pro-life Democrats could be a key component of the bill's fate.
The House Rules Committee will meet Friday afternoon to finalize the rules for the House debate this weekend on health legislation, which will determine the extent to which -- if at all -- Ellsworth's stronger anti-abortion language will be included. Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) had expressed openness to including the Indiana centrists language in reports on Wednesday.
Enough rope.
Pelosi lips are moving:
Abortion funding is clearly ALREADY in her 2000 page totalitarian “bill.”
“House leaders have maintained throughout the healthcare debate, though, that the bill does not and will not allow such funding.”
Well,,, what about this? Includes page numbers and details of funding;

AS IF unlimited access to benefits for illegal and undocumented aliens is OK!!!!
Bull.
This is a total lie -- Rep. Stupak was on Fox many weeks ago, describing his fight, the fact that he was denied in committee from introducing the Hyde language for a vote, while the Capps amendment which provides federal funding for abortions was adopted. It has been part of the legislation all along.
With all of the convoluted language in this bill there is no doubt that an ‘administrator’ or ‘secretary’ will have the authority to approve government funded abortions. Do not fall for this bill on any count.
Earlier this year they were denying that there was public funding for abortions in the legislation.
>> 40-some pro-life Democrats, led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), have threatened to oppose the bill
What do these pro-life Democrats have against pro-economy, pro-capitalism, pro-gun-rights, pro-free-speech, pro-military, pro-liberty, pro-independence, pro-marriage?
Democrats are liars. Waxman lied on TV the other day saying the abortion portion had been taken out of the bill. What could a democrat say that anyone would be stupid enough to believe them? Democrats believe they are doing good when they lie to achieve your better ends ... and of course, you must not be consulted on what you do or do not believe is best for you because democrats just ‘know’ you’re too stupid to follwo them in their persepctive so you need to be taken care of.
Speaker Pelosis 2,032-page government takeover of health care funds abortions. On line 17, p. 110, section 222 under Abortions for which Public Funding is Allowed the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run plan. The Speakers plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions.
What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan. Its right there on line 16, page 96, section 213, under Insurance Rating Rules. The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account - and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services.
Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run plan. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.
If these people would vote for that monstrosity if abortion funding is removed, they are not our friends.
Oh it’s far worse than that. The STimulus bill had in it provisions AND FUNDING for the ‘death panels’, but not one Republican representative seems to have discovered that yet ... we the people are now the subjects of the federal oligarchy.
Thank you for posting the specifics.
Just got off of the phone with Stupak’s office.
There are negotiations to change some wording. Obviously they intend on burying the issue in a could of political-speak.
And, no, amendments to this bill do NOT re-start the 72-hour clock, so we won’t get 72 hours to respond.
Two possibilities:
1. The purpose of the health bill is get federally funded abortion. In this case Pelosi falls on sword if abortion is really a show stopper.
2. The purpose of the health bill is to reform health care. It this case the abortion provisions were thrown in to create some cannon fodder for negotiating for passage of the rest of the bill. If so, Pelosi will gradually back off on the abortion stuff giving her evil minions some political cover to vote for the rest of the crappy bill.
and they really do know that they can do whatever the heck they want and get away with it. Who is going to stop them? They are the most powerful fascists in the world.
which is why we have a moral obligation to NOT pay taxes. However, this isn’t possible. Therefore, I am leaving this country as soon as I can.
