Democrats' Plan to Help 'Uninsurables' Requires 6-Month Wait

You're afraid your cancer is back, and a health insurance company just turned you down.

Under the health care bills in Congress, you could apply for coverage through a new high-risk pool that President Barack Obama promises would immediately start serving patients with pre-existing medical problems.

Wait a second. Read the fine print. You may have to be uninsured for six months to qualify.

"If you are a cancer patient and have cancer now, you can't wait six months to go into a plan because your condition can go from bad to death," said Stephen Finan, a policy expert with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. He called the waiting period in the Senate bill "unacceptable."

Obama proposed the pool in his September health care speech to Congress. Intended to serve the most vulnerable as a temporary fail-safe, it would stay in place until 2013. That's when insurance companies would be banned from denying coverage because of medical problems.

Government subsidies to make coverage more affordable for millions of uninsured would also start that year.

Obama credits his Republican presidential rival, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, for the risk-pools idea. But when the GOP candidate proposed it in 2008, the estimated cost was $7 billion to $10 billion a year.

The six-month wait is in the health care bill the Senate Finance Committee approved last month. To qualify for the pool, patients must be turned down for coverage because of a pre-existing condition and uninsured for at least six months.

"If you are somebody with cancer or a heart condition who needs immediate coverage and immediate treatment, that's not very helpful," said Karen Pollitz, a Georgetown University health policy professor.

Sounds like the equivalent of a death panel, doesn’t it? “Oh sorry your cancer caught up with you before your govt insurance kicked in, Mrs. Smith, but you would have been really expensive!”

Why do these govt idiots think insurance companies have something called “rules”? Because they need to stay in business.

The obvious solution is to cancel your insurance immediately (thus saving premiums immediately, also) to get the six-month clock running.

(”If you are somebody with cancer or a heart condition who needs immediate coverage and immediate treatment, that’s not very helpful,”)

Ask ANYONE (not just the uninsured) on government healthcare in the UK and Canada, how much the weight time is if you have cancer. After all, if you’re dead from cancer while you’re on a waiting list, health care costs are cheaper! Isn’t that how people want health care costs to go down?

Why do all these people blame Insurance Companies? They are not the one's who determine price for medical care or prescription drugs.

Insurance companies offer the product which helps people afford the expensive cost as a service to people and everybody tries to make them a villian in all this.

This is the same thing that the Rats and RINOs have been complaining that the insurance companies have been doing. Most insurances companies have the exact 6 month wait period for pre-existing conditions.

Its a death sentence. If you have a terminal illness, the Democrats are saying, "good luck." And the Washington bean counters go home happy.

Just more evidence that the whole point of universal "health care" is not really about making medical care affordable and accessible on demand. It's about seizing control of Americans' lives and owning a monstrous chunk of GDP.

There seem to be a lot of Americans who indulge in “magical thinking” concerning health insurance. They don’t seem to realize that insurance cannot lower the cost of health care, it can only increase it. Insurance can only spread the costs so that healthy people have higher costs than they would without insurance and very sick people have much lower costs than they would without insurance. The cost for the nation’s health care in total is much higher because of insurance and especially because of government meddling in health care.

The only long term help would come from getting the government out of health care completely. Somehow we have taught people to think it is “natural” for the government to be involved in health care. As soon as they can be taught that it is natural for government to be involved in everything from hopscotch to hangovers we will be a communist nation. We are very well on the way now and moving rapidly.

Gee, by the time those poor people get “insured” they will be dead. Is that the intent?

Well, if one has a terminal illness (terminal being the operative word), then you’re going to be dead in 6 months or less anyway, regardless of whether you receive treatment.
