Obama's Half Brother Recalls Their Abusive Father

China (AP) -- President Barack Obama's half brother has broken his media silence to discuss his new novel -- the semi-autobiographical story of an abusive parent patterned on their late father, the mostly absent figure Obama wrote about in his own memoir.
In his first interview, Mark Ndesandjo told The Associated Press that he wrote ''Nairobi to Shenzhen'' in part to raise awareness of domestic violence.
''My father beat my mother and my father beat me, and you don't do that,'' said Ndesandjo, whose mother, Ruth Nidesand, was Barack Obama Sr.'s third wife. ''It's something which I think affected me for a long time, and it's something that I've just recently come to terms with.''
Like his novel's main character, Ndesandjo had an American mother who is Jewish and who divorced his Kenyan father. The novel, which goes on sale Wednesday by the self-publishing company Aventine Press, is one of several books in the works by relatives of the president.
President Obama's parents separated two years after he was born in Hawaii in 1961. The senior Obama, a Kenyan exchange student, divorced the president's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, in 1964 and had at least six other children in his native Kenya.
For the past seven years, Ndesandjo has been living in the booming southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong (snip).
Ndesandjo, who said he attended Obama's inauguration as a family guest, declined to discuss his earliest memories of the president or describe their relationship over the years. However, he said he plans to meet his brother in Beijing when the president makes his first visit to China on Nov. 15-18.
''My plan is to introduce my wife to him. She is his biggest fan,'' he said.

Are you saying that Obama II, if born in Hawaii, had only one parent US citizen and did not become a British citizen at birth?

I also don't believe it can be stated with certainty that the illegitimate child of a bigamous marriage with a US citizen mother born on US soil, but with a foreign citizen father is or is not a “natural born citizen.”
It appears that Kezia did not consider herself to have been in a legally sanctioned Muslim marriage and their tribe, the Luo, were not traditionally Muslim. Kezia considered BHO Sr to have been a bigamist.
BHO Sr’s father appears to have gone outside the traditional non-Muslim colonial Christian background of his upbringing as a political protest against the British, much like the Black Muslims in the US.

I asked because I think there might be (unconfirmed) evidence that BHO, Sr married third wife Ruth in 1964 in Mass.
If so, it might explain the necessity for the divorce, which became final in Mar 1964 (assuming BHO, Sr & Stanley Ann were married).
BHO, Sr and Ruth’s son Mark was born in 1964.
Also, according to “Dreams,” Mark was the uncontested heir to BHO’s Sr’s estate because none of the other children could prove their legal claim to be his offspring. Mark had all the necessary documents.
Ruth says she was married about 7 yrs to BHO, Sr. They might have divorced in 1971. Wondered if that might have had anything to do with the law [polygamy] you are citing (rather than the abuse) & also BHO Sr’s trip to the US that year.
Much speculation here, and even if true, does it tie in anywhere to the subject of our focus.

Both Ruth & her sons reveal as little as possible and are as vague as they can be.
By the time of BHO’s death, Ruth’s second son, David, was already deceased (died in a motorcycle accident, apparently while living with one of BHO’s half-brothers). Thus the assertion by BHO [in Dreams] that Auma said Mark had uncontested claim to BHO Sr’s estate because he was the only child with documents to prove his relationship to BHO, Sr..
Causes me to think that BHO had to have been contacted by attorneys concerning BHO Sr’s estate -— if he was BHO Sr’s son.

Re the genealogical link: I do not think they were divorced in Mass (and definitely not in 1965). I think that may refer to when they departed US for Kenya. This source is a bit sloppy.
Ruth said she was married about 7 yrs — which if they were married in 1964, would be about 1971. Did the divorce occur in Kenya or US? do not know.
I have not checked Ruth’s whereabouts that year (1971), but BHO did come to USA, apparently near the end of that year — his only visit with BHO in the US.

Ruth re-married & had her sons’ names changed (to their present name). She remarried, IIRC, in 1980, or thereabouts.
In Dreams, Ruth asks Barry why his mother did not have his name changed when she remarried. He did not answer her.

FRED NERKS: well, that opens another possible can of worms doesn’t it? That means, as zero didn’t visit Kenya until several years after the death of Obama Sr, any papers, documents, manuscripts etc...from the Obama Sr ‘estate’ would now be in the possession of Mark Ndesandjo.

Another thought worth considering:
Barack Jr’s mother, Ann Dunham visited Kenya when Obama Sr died. She met her co-wife, Kezia and they both became great friends.Since then, the Obamas have formed an extraordinary bond, despite their unstable family history and cultural and geographic differences.

Are you really saying you doubt the words of Bill Ayers, author of the immortal classic, "Dreams of My Father?" I sure hope not. Furthermore, Fred, I am worried that you just may be showing alarming signs of euro-centric cultural chauvinism and lamentable insensitivity.

I consider the possibility that BHO, Sr met Ruth prior to the divorce and may have, in fact, asked for a divorce because of his new relationship with Ruth. It was common in those days for a woman to initiate the divorce paperwork even though it was the man who was the actual originator.
If Ruth was pregnant in Mass. with Mark, this would provide an explanation. Of course, all of this is speculation, but see my Post #50

Two years later, Barack Snr was accepted at Harvard and left Ann and their little boy behind for the east coast.
Throughout this time he had written regularly to Kezia, even sending pictures of Ann and Barack Jr.
What he failed to tell his first wife was that he had also met a second new woman, an American teacher called Ruth.
Nor did he tell her, on his return to Kenya in 1965, that she had become his third wife.
Kezia said: “I’d moved to the family compound in Alego. When Barack got back, he came to see me and said, ‘I don’t have a job or a house yet. When I get settled I will come back for you.’”
But Barack Snr then lost both legs in a car crash coming back from a nightclub - and Kezia discovered the truth.
She said: “When I went to see him in the hospital I thought, ‘What is that lady in there with him for?’
“Then Barack said: ‘This is Ruth.’ Next he turned to Ruth and said: ‘I have a wife and two children.’”
Barack Snr went on to become a senior economist in Jomo Kenyatta’s government, enjoying the lifestyle with Ruth that Kezia had dreamed of.

Kindergarten head Ruth divorced Barack after seven years and now has the surname Ndesandjo.
