The Tragedy of Krispy Kreme
Yahoo Finance News ^ | October 13, 2009 | Carol Kopp

Posted on 10/14/2009 8:48:23 AM PDT by ETL

Krispy Kreme had been a popular doughnut chain in the South since 1937, but remained unknown to the rest of us until about 1996. That's when the first Krispy Kreme popped up in New York City, on West 23rd Street. ..."

Krispy Kreme stock hit a high of about $49 in 2003. Then it started on a long downward spiral, losing about 90% of its value.

This company had problems that had nothing to do with its doughnut recipe.

It over-expanded and took on crushing debt. There were allegations of management misconduct. Some franchises went bankrupt. Competition was fierce in the cheap eats category. More people started consuming healthy foods.

In short, Krispy Kreme managed to lose money selling something that is both cheap and delicious.

You are soooo wrong!!! KK is the best one going, and all of my children agree. Here in the South we like our women sweet too, which is why Hillary lost so bad.

KK are great when they’re hot, but not so good after that

DD sink a a hunk of lead & very often are undercooked, but their coffee is good

Winchell’s donuts are the best, but their coffee sucks

Wish I could find a place selling Winchell’s donuts & DD coffee. That would be heaven.

Krispy Kremes are God’s reward to we his peeps. Seriously! It was on the original 10 commandments. The Hebrews misunderstood and ended up with bagels.

.

Part of the problem is just that: Northerners like their donuts more cakey...dunkin donuts like....

:]

But a hot krispy Kreme that melts away...Yum-ola

What, no Canadian Tim Horton’s fans on this thread?

Tim could figure out how to sell donuts profitably, and he was a hockey player...

I don’t know if the Uncle Guiseppe’s Italian grocery chain is anywhere except Long Island, but...

Well, first of all it is the MOST beautiful grocery store I’ve ever seen, and they play the BEST music in the background (a combination of traditional Italian songs and stuff from the Rat-Pack era).

AND...they make fresh-baked donuts right in front of you. They make an sugared apple cider donut that is...I don’t even know how to describe it! It melts in your mouth and the cider flavor melds with the slight crunchiness of the sugar...it’s fantastic. If you can get them still hot...it’s heaven.

BTW..I’ve never had a KK donut, but DD is all over the place here in NY. I remember when DD was new, and all the donuts were made on-site. That is no longer the case, and it shows.

Regards,

Why did you have to show those glazed raspberry filled ones? I love the jelly. Duncan Donuts are almost always stale stale. We used to have a Mr. Donut that was pretty good. But donuts are soooooooo baaaaaaaaaaaad for me.

BTW, on a recent trip to Penn Station I saw a Krispy Kreme.

Dunkin’ Donuts are foul. They used to be decent, but now leave an unpleasant film in the mouth.

Tim Horton’s. That’s what ya want!

I agree... the few Krispy Kreme doughnuts I've had were mediocre to awful. Why have they supposedly been so popular all these years?

In my opinion, KKs are best eaten hot--like right out of the fryer. Once they cool, they are, at best, mediocre. But if I ever drive past a KK and the "HOT" sign is on, I can't help but pull in.

I would guess that most people outside Dixie don't eat them at the store; they get them from people who bring them into work or at the grocery store or whatever--and they just aren't good that way. But hot--oh, hot--a little slice of heaven.

LOL! We have some talented folks here at FR! Some of you should be writing material for our now God-awful sitcoms and late shows! The writing today really sucks. The only thing worse are the no-talent schmoes they have acting in or hosting them.

That's all I have to say.

For anything other than straight glazed donuts, DD beats KK easily.
