6-year-old sentenced to reform school for "dangerous weapon" on school property.

CBS) A 6-year-old Cub Scout recently suspended from school after bringing a camping utensil to the lunchroom made it clear he was not happy with the Delaware school district's decision.

"I think it's very wrong. It's not fair at all," Zachary Christie of Newark, Del. told CBS' "The Early Show."

"It's not fair for anybody," he said.

Zachary's excitement over joining the Cub Scouts may just land him in reform school for 45 days.

Zachary was suspended from his 1st grade class in Delaware's Christina School District after bringing a camping utensil - a combination knife/fork/spoon - to use at lunch, prompting calls to reexamine schools' zero-tolerance policy for bringing weapons to school.

Asked why he brought it to school, Zachary said he just wanted to eat lunch with the tool. "It's just a cool camping utensil," he said. . . . .

. . . But the strict enforcement of the policy has its supporters.

"There is no parent who wants to get a phone call where they hear that their child no longer has two good seeing eyes because there was a scuffle and someone pulled out a knife," said George Evans, the school district board's president.

There has been a move to give school officials more flexibility in "weapon"-related incidents. After a third-grade girl was expelled for a year after bringing in a knife to cut the birthday cake her grandmother sent in to the class, a new law was passed allowing officials to modify punishments on a case-by-case basis. But that was for expulsions, not suspensions as Zachary is faced with. Another revision to the law is being drafted to address suspensions, according to the report. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/...n5381306.shtml

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye!!

And this is why America is on the decline. Mamas don’t let your babies go to school without bubble wrap...

Parents could always move here to Texas. It is a little more sane about stuff like this.

Or home school their kids.

I have packed a pocket knife since I was around 7 years old. Feel absolutely naked without it. It is a good thing I no longer travel by airline anymore.

Simple, pull him out and home school him.

a new law was passed allowing officials to modify punishments on a case-by-case basis

So any kid with a Scouting affiliation is automatically labeled as a weapon-owner.

If the eye-poke threshold is the standard for zero tolerance, it follows logically that pens and pencils are considered contraband throughout the disrict as well.

I agree that with such young children the “tool’ could be dangerous, and maybe the teacher should have just taken it away , called the parents and asked them to pick it up.

That communicates the problem , yet doesn’t make such a federal case out of it.

If I had brought a little knife to elementary school and the teacher saw it, yeah, she would have taken it to her desk and I could have it back at the end of the year. Problem solved.

There was a case recently where a kid got suspended for bringing a spork to school.

Rule 1: Don’t claim things are unfair. Claim things are discriminatory and biased and unnecessarily cruel. Rule 2: Walk don’t run to remove your child from any school where there is a reasonable expectation that six-year-olds will gouge each other’s eyes out with Cub Scout utensil sets.

There is actually a silver lining to this insanity. On CBS News last night, the mother said she was going to home-school her son rather than sending him to “reform school.”

More info at “Cub Scout, 6, Suspended for 'Weapon'

From that article:

"It just seems unfair," said Zachary, who is being home-schooled while his mother, Debbie Christie, tries to fight the suspension. That involved Zachary appearing before a district disciplinary committee with his karate instructor and mother's fiancé vouching for him as character witnesses.

I can’t find the video, but I saw this flipping through the channels last night on CBS Evening News.

And how the hell are you supposed to homeschool if the parents both work 60-70 hours per week?!?!

Insanity reigns on both sides of the aisle.

This inanity began when Al Sharpton and his ilk began to notice that more black kids than white were getting slapped for bringing in implements that they were clear were going to be used violently.

The screams of “racist” went to the rooftops.

So the administrators made it easy on themselves to dodge this kind of slander by factoring out any indication of intention. Instead the items themselves were banned. (I believe it’s still possible to stab an eye out with a pencil or pen.)

Man, my 7 y.o. Wolf Cub is a juvenile deliquent, according to these idiots—his dad just bought a pocket knife for them to take on the Boy Scout camping trip in a week and a half....this is why we sacrifice to send them to a Catholic school with some common sense.

Kids today usually do not have the upbringing or discipline that you or I may have had.

Maybe this kid is ok with the knife, but kids get out of hand, show off, get goofy and then disaster. What would be wrong with a reasonable approach. And where does it say the kid went to “reform school”?? He was suspended for making a poor decision...bringing a knife to school when that was not part of the rules. If the parents don’t like the rule, have them attend a meeting (WHAT? Parents actually involved in their school???) and change the rules.

Maybe govt schools have gone astray ..well, they have...but where have the parents been? For over 40 years, things have been going down hill and now they are SHOCKED at how it has all turned out. Home school? Not always possible..and maybe the parents now should take responsibility for letting the teachers’ unions etc take “control”.
