Independent Candidate Stirs Up the Governor’s Race in New Jersey
NY Slimes ^ | October 11, 2009 | DAVID M. HALBFINGER

Christopher J. Daggett had the crowd on its feet.

Well, it was a bar, there were not many seats, and the crowd was only about 50 people. But they were devoted Democrats in a bastion of New Jersey’s Democratic machine. And Mr. Daggett, the independent candidate for governor, was winning them over.

While the Democratic governor, Jon S. Corzine, and the Republican candidate, Christopher J. Christie, appear to be turning off voters with nasty ads and personal attacks, Mr. Daggett is turning them on — or at least persuading them to give him a closer look. After he showed up his rivals in the first debate, his campaign is causing concern in both parties. His plan to cut property taxes is getting attention. His poll numbers are climbing. And on Sunday, he won a rousing endorsement from New Jersey’s largest and most influential newspaper, The Star-Ledger of Newark.

NY Slimes excerpt: Pollsters say Mr. Daggett is hurting Mr. Christie more, by siphoning off anti-incumbent voters. And some talk-radio hosts are asking if he is not a stalking horse for Mr. Corzine. But in a sign of his rising stature, opposition researchers from both parties have begun sifting through Mr. Daggett’s business dealings.

Neuter them in 2010; vote the rest of the RATs/RINOs out in 2012. Take America back from a government that represents themselves ONLY.

What do Freepers in New Jersey think? Would an Independent who at least pledges to cut property taxes be better than a RINO? Particularly when so much of the state is so brainwashed they wouldn’t vote for Jesus Christ if he had an “R” after his name?

All he’s doing is splitting votes that Christie would otherwise get, and the lib media in New York is giving him LOTS of airplay for that exact reason...

Exactly. Once again, we see that third parties are good for nothing more than electing Democrats. No true conservative would support a third party instead of trying to retake the nominally conservative second party instead.

Corzine apparently has enough money to hire a stalking horse. If this guy posed any threat to Corzine, he would get no coverage.

Just another example of what happens when... news media "votes" by manipulations, in this case, by overtly supporting an independent so that they are all the while under the radar supporting a 'rat.

“on Sunday, he won a rousing endorsement from New Jersey’s largest and most influential newspaper, The Star-Ledger of Newark”

Yep, that's what big liberal papers do when their obvious choice, a big giant creepy liberal, turns out to be a POS. They are still hoping for Corizine but they figure they obviously can't endorse him so they give a bump to the loony independent and hope they peel more voters off the conservative than they pull off their liberal POS buddy.

I saw the debate of all three of them on TV.

The so called independent sided with the liberal idiot on every single issue. I think the RATS got him to run to split the Republican vote with his cut property tax BS.

His tax plan is interesting. It would extend the sales tax to services. I'm a service provider. So I have to consider the ramifications. If the property tax savings for me and my customers was realized, it might be a good deal.

Thanks for the inside scoop. Too many people in our part of Pennsylvania feel they are far enough away from Philadelphia to be exempt from the toxic waste flowing over from NJ. Rendell is slowly changing that perception.

So far it looks like I'm the only one on this thread who actually lives in NJ. It's so funny when out-of-staters get involved in our elections. We've got enough problems on our own, thanks.

Glad this was posted. It prompted me to watch the debate on cspan.....i'm watching it now. I'll definitely give Daggett a look.

There’s a Republican running, but no conservative.

Are Jersey people’s complaint about taxes justified? More than half of the budget goes for schools. Taxpayers vote for more taxes every year in school budgets and then get mad because taxes go up. Tax cuts in the campaign are just boob bait for the bubbas.
