In a dusty environment petroleum based lubricants are the worst thin you can put on an M16 based rifle. There are good quality dry lubricants like Militec-1 that have glowing reports from our troops.

That's what I used during Gulf War I.

After arriving in theater and when the CH-47 arrived, it kicked up up all sorts of grit and sand that immediately stuck to my weapon. My M-4 just “ground” to a halt.

First chance I had, got the wife to mail the dry-lube powder and everything was good to go after that.
