Haley was successful. The "new" leadership isn't doing very much today.
I don't think the problem is "old generals". It's that most of the old Republicans still in politics or office are RINOS. ie: Mclame, E.D. Dole, etc. Barbour is conservative to his core.
Depends on how you define success. He certainly got more Republicans elected. But where did that get us over the long haul?
