The State Worker: California union will discover its clout on Columbus Day
SacBee: State Worker ^ | 10/8/9 | Jon Ortiz

We'll see on Monday how much pull the state's biggest public employee's union has - with its own members.

The fight over whether Columbus Day remains a paid holiday for state workers "has become the hill that our union is willing to die on," said Angela Morales, a job steward for Service Employees International Union Local 1000.

Yvonne Walker, president of the local, has told the 95,000 employees she represents to treat Monday as a paid day off.

It's not, says Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Department of Personnel Administration. On Tuesday, DPA's Julie Chapman fired off a letter to the union that said it was "advocating an illegal job action." The state will consider anyone who doesn't show up AWOL and will dock their pay.

Walker shot back with a her own letter: "Rather than threatening honest, hardworking state workers ... the governor and DPA should focus on consulting their legal advisers concerning compliance with California's labor laws."

The fight stems from legislation passed earlier this year that dumped Columbus Day and Lincoln's Birthday as paid state holidays. Around that time, SEIU and the administration struck a deal dropping the holidays and adding two personal days off. But Republican legislators twice blocked the new contract. So the personal days are gone, and SEIU believes Schwarzenegger pulled a switcheroo.

Hopefully the voters will see that that these unions are the root of the state's budget problems — and the state will not recover until the public employee unions are entirely broken.

Pay em with IOU’s.

Seriously, this is what happens when people in leadership positions are known to capitulate. They get roughed up.

Looks like Schwartzie is ticking off both sides with his actions.

He is toast as far as I am concerned. Sucking up to Obama now for a position will not endear him to either party. He has sold us out and not helped California one bit.

And SEIU is as illegal as ACORN.

They all can go away and have all the holidays they want.

Ayn Rand was right about this. Its all about political clout and pull and not about getting things done.

True...and CA seems overrun by them in the biggest cities.
The legislature is lopsided with them-—some radical. As long as there is all this anchor baby and illegals and high dollar welfare/cash assistance/rent subsidy payments, this will go on. Unions are a drag on the economy. This needs to be a right to work state.

I couldn’t agree more. The unions own this state and said ownership is killing it.

And in other news, time for these government-worker babies to join the real world. In the private sector (where our nation’s wealth is actually generated) hardly anyone gets Columbus day as a paid holiday: we’re too busy trying to afford government largesse to take days off.

I work at a sizeable office complex full of private businesses. Next land parcel over is occupied by government. It’s stunning how many days I go to work and the government parking lot is empty.

Lately I’ve seen signs posted in people’s yards that say, “State Employee and Proud of It” When I see these signs I think: good grief, we’re doomed.

In the private sector we don’t get these off, at all.

What is their entitlement beef.

Don’t they get enough bene’s?

"Rather than threatening honest, hardworking state workers ... "

I thought that this was about union "workers."

A few years ago when Schwartzie tried to pass some ballot measures which threatened the unions, his efforts were in vain. The unions (all of them) cranked up the money machine, like I’ve never seen before or since, and crushed his attempts at reform. I’ll never forget the day I went to the polls and felt a little intimidated because SEIU thugs were literally hanging out inside the polling place, wearing their SEIU shirts complete with campaign buttons on them. It was a small polling place, so the presence of 4 large people was hard to ignore. I had to ask the poll workers to make them take off their campaign buttons and they did so. But just the fact they were wearing SEIU shirts and were squatting inside the poll made their positions clear. Later, I reported the incident to the county registrar and to some of my elected reps. I was pretty much met with a collective yawn.

Remember that state employees get over a dozen paid annual HOLIDAYS on top of 3 weeks' VACATION, plus SICK TIME too.

So enjoy your stay on Columbus Hill, Ms. Morales.

Even much of the rank and file now realize that they'd better be willing to compromise lest they lose ALL their jobs and/or be replaced by non-union replacements.

Someone needs to remind the SEIU (one more time) that they don't run the state. The taxpayers of the state are fed up with the tail wagging the dog at their expense.

Hope that Lame Duck governator can remember he's not a 'girlie man.'
