What is a degree in government, and how does that qualify someone to work in a financial firm? Sounds like a useful degree, like ancient latin or surfing.

Six out of every ten words in English come somehow from Latin, and most of today's tongues have at least some words from Latin.

That may be too generous, but to say learning Latin helped my English vocabulary is an understatement. It's the root of almost innumerable scientific terms.

I’m not sure, but I imagine that it’s about as practical as most other undergraduate degrees that aren’t in the hard sciences or engineering.

What is a degree in government, ...

After my son was at the University of Texas for five years I told him he was going to have to quit playing around and scratch around and see what he had enough credits in to get a degree. That turned out to be a degree in government. It was simply his get out of jail card and has nothing to do with anything he has done since.

from TRP’s web site:
“T. Rowe Price Congratulates Mary J. Miller On Proposed Nomination To U.S. Treasury RoleBALTIMORE (October 5, 2009) – T. Rowe Price (NASDAQ-GS: TROW) issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama’s intent to nominate Mary J. Miller, who currently serves as director of the firm’s Fixed Income Division, to be assistant secretary of the Treasury for financial markets in the United States Department of the Treasury:

We are pleased to extend our congratulations to Mary on this great honor and applaud her commitment to serving our nation. If confirmed by the Senate, we are confident that she will make significant contributions in this important role.

Mary has served more than 26 years in our Fixed Income Division, leading this unit for the last five years and helping to successfully build a very strong fixed income team with a deep bench of talent. In addition, she serves as a member of the firm’s Management and Finance Committees, and as president of a number of T. Rowe Price fixed income mutual funds.

If Mary is confirmed, we will announce a succession plan that we believe will continue our long tradition of investment management excellence for our clients around the world. We are proud of the significant contributions that Mary has made over the years in upholding and enhancing that standard of investment excellence and extend our sincere congratulations to her on this well-deserved nomination.”

I thought TRP was a good firm.
