In my article Why Barack Obama won't meet the Dalai Lama, I had reported as follows: "His Holiness is going ahead with his plans to visit Arunachal Pradesh in November, which could more or less coincide with Obama's visit to China.
The United States officials were reportedly worried that the Chinese anger, over the Dalai Lama's [ Images ] visit to Arunachal Pradesh, might come in the way of the success of Obama's promised efforts to persuade Beijing [ Images ] to resume its dialogue with His Holiness. It is not clear whether they gave any advice to His Holiness in this matter.
It is learnt that officials of the Obama administration have stepped up pressure on the advisers of His Holiness -- to persuade the Dalai Lama not to raise any controversy over Arunachal Pradesh for the time being -- till the American President succeeds in persuading the Chinese to resume their dialogue with the representatives of His Holiness.
The Obama administration is showing signs of greater sensitivity to the concerns and interests of China than those of India. Reliable reports indicate that it is veering towards a policy of neutrality on the issue of Arunachal Pradesh, which has been a major bone of contention between India and China.
It is believed to be dragging its feet on the implementation of the understanding reached between the preceding George Bush [ Images ] administration and the government of India, to undertake searches in Arunachal Pradesh territory for US Air Force [ Images ] personnel, who had gone missing in action during the Second World War.
It is learnt that the formats of the joint exercises between the three wings of the armed forces of the two countries, which were agreed upon during the Bush administration, are being reviewed in order to delete elements, which could cause concern to not only China, but also Pakistan -- such as joint exercises between the two armies in the Siachen area to enable US army personnel to get exposed to high altitude conditions, joint naval exercises in the seas to the east of India etc.
While the Obama administration wants to go ahead with the overall format of the strategic relationship with India, as laid down by the Bush administration, it wants to have a second look at those aspects which could cause concern to China.
There was one joint naval exercise off Japan [ Images ] involving ships of the navies of India, the US and Japan, after Obama assumed office. Such exercises are likely to be avoided in the future.
There is also a possibility of the US abstaining when the specific proposal for assistance from the Asian Development Bank [ Get Quote ] for a flood control project in Arunachal Pradesh comes up for approval before the ADB. The ADB's Board of Governors had earlier this year, after Obama came to office, approved a basket of projects proposed by India despite opposition from China.
It is learnt that ADB officials have been saying that approval for the package as a whole did not mean approval of each individual item in the package and that each individual item has to be approved separately. Efforts are being made to scuttle ADB support for the proposal relating to Arunachal Pradesh.
The Obama administration seems to be thinking that all that it needs to do to humour India and soften the blow -- due to its steady reversal of the pro-India policies initiated by the Bush administration -- is to accord the honour of a state visit to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] in November and play up the ceremonial honours accorded to him.
In the last few days, officials of the US State Department have been briefing the media about the kind of honours that will be accorded to Dr Singh when he visits Washington. These are meant to show that there has been no change in US policies towards India under the Obama administration. The reality is that on every matter, which is of concern to India, greater attention is being paid to China's sensitivities and concerns.

of course he is we are so indebted to china we have to do whatever they want and we cant do anything about it. china can destroy us with one push of the currency sell button. so there is nothing we can do to china unless we want to default on our debt obligations. china doesnt need us anymore we need them. they have enuff consumers in there country right now. they do not need us.
Don't both Nancy Pelosi's husband and Diane Feinstein's husband have a lot of business connections with China? I suspect there are a lot of other Democrats with family members with multi-million dollar business connections with China. It's the Democrat Party's way of doing business.
Obama knows who made him president.
i totally respectfully disagree. china telling him what to do or have chaos erupt in the markets. hence the snub of the dali lama
yes china can destroy us they just have to dump the 1.3 trillion in us currency on the open market and were done. dont believe me? do some research you will find the truth
Distantly possible, but highly improbable. China needs the US as a steady market. Why would they kill their golden goose? They’re not as dumb as we are.
Given our reliance on China’s money, Barry will follow China into Hell.
they dont need us anymore. they have a population of 1.3 billion they dont need 300 million usa. they are inflating there economy as well and trying to get there people to spend to make up the difference which they are according to import export numbers. dont forget this is a communist country who strives to be number 1 world power. you think there happy as number 2? i dont
China's government overall is not eager for military conflict, despite the paranoia of many. (There are always individual exceptions, of course.) They are FAR more worried about their own population. The rural West is VERY unhappy that the urban East has wages that are TEN times higher. The recent prosperity is not migrating West fast enough, and there are riots, literally daily. In a nation of 1.3 billion, a group of 30 million is not difficult to form, and even a Tiannenmen-style response would not be enough to save their skins from that. This is the exact reason why they don't like religions growing too large. It isn't out of some "evil" motivation to hate Faith... it's because one charismatic leader of a group of 30 million can quickly organize his/her followers and end their gravy train. Like virtually all politicians all over the world, they want to keep their posts on top, more than anything else. Because of that very reliable tenet, I can remain confident that China does not want to destroy the US economy. They're more than happy to simply keep us as a virtual colony. Once we're no longer so valuable in that capacity, then things may change... but few leaders (Kim Jong Il aside) want to ruin their primary stabilizing factors.
Like any good team, they are DELIGHTED to be #2, since they were #77 in living memory. China was called the "sick old man of Asia". Even Chinese could not understand how they could have so many people and resources and a 4800 year head start, and yet still get their butts kicked by outside forces, and out-developed technologically... but they are still shooting for #1, and looking forward to attaining it. They won't (and can't) do it by taking us down economically or militarily. As SunTzu taught them 3000 years ago, the best victory is the one where you do not fight at all. They can simply let Liberalism wear us away, while milking us for trillions, and become #1 without allocating any time, resources, or trouble to the accomplishment.
When they dump the 1.3 trillion currency in they open market those currency will be worth nothing. They will get nothing out of those 1.3 trillion. They cant cut us off without bleeding themselves to death.
they can print and they dont care about money they only care about being the number 1 super power
And everybody cares about being #1. Not all of them can be.
