Calif. GOP looks to 2010 races for gov., US Senate

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) -- The Republican race to challenge liberal stalwart Barbara Boxer for her U.S. Senate seat next year is shaping up as a likely contest between a socially conservative state lawmaker and a former Silicon Valley chief executive whose views are barely known to GOP voters in the state. Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive and John McCain confidante, is not yet an official candidate, but she has registered a campaign committee, "Carly for California," and her team had a strong presence at this weekend's statewide party convention at a desert resort near Palm Spring.

Fiorina, who is in the final stages of treatment for breast cancer, did not attend.

Her GOP rival, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore of Irvine, a military officer and businessman who has already spent months working to secure the party's base, told delegates Sunday that he is eager to have the competition, but now is not the time to go with a political neophyte.

"We don't know where she stands on a lot of issues," said DeVore, 47. "We do know: She supported the bailout; I didn't. She supported aspects of the stimulus. I have been vociferously opposed to it."

"Now is the time to go with principle, now is the time to go with tested," he said.

Still, DeVore's critique was relatively gentle. He said recent polls show them virtually even in a theoretical matchup against Boxer.

I will vote for DeVore. If Fiorina gets the nomination, I’ll vote third party.

After my disappointment with the Terminator’s gradual shift to RINOism I’ll wait as long as possible before making a choice but due to being a “decline to state” party member, the primaries leave me out anyway.

Meg Whitman, the likely candidate for Governor, is yet another irritating moderate Republican. Why are they the only ones that seem to pop up - and get support from the state party?

"... and a former Silicon Valley chief executive whose views are barely known to GOP voters in the state."

Which almost certainly means that she's afraid to divulge her views to the GOP. Which means that she's probably, at least to a degree, not socially conservative.

Same reason why CA went for McLame. The "lesser of two evils weevils" syndrome.

I hate to say it but I think is safe to say Ill opt out on the next election. CA wont have any respectable candidates and I already know boxer will win. My vote usually doesn’t count in liberal ca :(

Opt out? They want you to give up. You want to give them what they want? Don’t give up without a fight.

She was probably hoping to have been anointed by now without having been scritinized. But Chuck DeVore is in it to win it.

I just don't want to see another underfunded candidate running against Boxer. Carly has the money. I don't know if DeVore does or doesn't. Whitman has the money but looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

No more Green believers

Yeah, Meg is wonderful if you don’t mind that she admittedly hasn’t voted until recently. As recently as 2003, she hadn’t voted. It’s still unclear just when she did start voting, if she in fact has.

Here’s a woman that wants to run the state of California, but she never cared enough about the issues, to vote. She admittedly isn’t very informed on the issues. That’s why she didn’t vote. She says she was busy making a living, so didn’t feel like she had time.

Hey, we all work Meg. Those of us who care, try to be informed on the issues and vote, whether we’re busy or not.

I have always thought of it as a civic duty. Meg evidently has never thought of it that way.

I don’t really have much use for people like this, and voting for this person to be governor is about the farthest thing from my mind.

What is wrong with this state, that a decent conservative individual won’t declare and run for the position of Governor? Primary day is coming all too quick. Are we going to be stuck with the Meg without a clue?

What bothers me is that the GOP seems to think “well, we’re not Democrats” is a winning argument.

Unless I start seeing candidates that are truly conservative rather than Democrat light, I’ll vote third party.

Until the GOP wakes up, they will not get my vote.

Yeah, Meg didn’t vote, but she did make a hefty financial contribution... to Barbara Boxer’s re-election six years ago. :-/

Yeah, she’s the great Republican hope. (barf)

She’s the typical big-business grease the wheels contributor. She had no values, so it was easy to back just about anyone that might rule favorably at some point in time.

I can guarantee you one thing, the California Republican Party leadership is just wetting their pants they’re so excited she’ll be representing them.

And who represents us?

F the California Republican Party Leadership!
