Letterman Extortion Case Raises Questions for CBS

BILL CARTER and BRIAN STELTER October 2, 2009 If this happened to anyone else, it would just be a punch line.

David Letterman, who built his career skewering philandering politicians and show business “weasels” and “boneheads,” finds himself in the middle of his own celebrity scandal, after he admitted having multiple affairs with employees of his production company, Worldwide Pants.

For the intensely private Mr. Letterman, the revelations, which resulted from a bizarre extortion attempt, are sure to be extremely embarrassing, especially as he tries to extend his lead in the late-night contest. ”I have had sex with women who work for me on this show,” he told his audience on Thursday night, calling himself “creepy.” He added that he hoped “to protect my job.”

More seriously, they raised questions for both his company and CBS about whether his actions constituted sexual harassment or at least abuse of a power relationship over employees.

A central figure in the case — one of the women who did have a sexual relationship with Mr. Letterman, according to representatives of the show — is Mr. Letterman’s longtime personal assistant, Stephanie Birkitt, who also often appeared on the air. The sexual relationships had ended before Mr. Letterman was married in March, a Worldwide Pants executive said.

David Letterman should be fired. People have been fired for much less. In fact; the ones that were fired for less; may I suggest you start filing lawsuits.

Letterman is not only boring, but he’s pathetic. I wouldn’t be surprised what he’s been “doing”. What a nasty old pervert.

The girlfriend of the guy who was extorting should have just filed a harassment lawsuit. She would have made about the same off that. This guy is scum, pond scum of the worst kind and needs to be OFF TV. They kicked Imus off for less.

It'll be interesting when he gets a call from his mother about this. She seems quite “with it” mentally, this must have floored her. I remember how Jay Leno went after Kanye West with the ‘what would your mother have said about this’, and it actually made that egotist stop talking about how his pain caused others pain, for about half a minute.

What if it wasn’t harassment? What if she was just a big fan, and did so willingly without any secondary motive from either of them?

There isn’t a darn thing illegal about schtupping the staff when they are willing and consenting adults. Certainly no reason to fire someone. Indicative of who he is as a person, sure, but no one should think he’s going anywhere because of it. At least not in this lifetime.

There certainly could be some EEOC implications if promotions and raises were involved. Staff members that didn't get boinked might have an axe to grind, etc.

The former girlfriend. The extortionist (a producer on 48 Hours) came up with the scheme after their relationship was over. She had nothing to do with it (she just has bad judgment in men)

What about her coworkers? Do they think that you only get a promotion if you sleep with the boss? In addition, I bet as the story unfolds we will find out that the extortion was about one PO-ed boyfriend who said," I know about your creepy stuff (?) and then instead of extorision it started as a bribe...hush money.

What does Dave do? Did he have groups of company people? It may be that this is the creepy story which brings him down.
