Latest job report 'sobering' : Obama

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama on Friday said the latest grim government job loss figures were a "sobering" reminder of a difficult "grind" ahead towards economic recovery.

"Today's jobs report is a sobering reminder that progress comes in fits and starts," Obama said after returning to Washington from Copenhagen, where he lobbied for Chicago's failed bid to land the 2016 Olympics.

"We're going to need to grind out this recovery step by step."

In a blow to hopes of imminent recovery, new Labor Department figures on Friday showed job losses accelerated to 263,000 in September, pushing the unemployment rate to a new 26-year high of 9.8 percent.

Obama, who is facing intense political pressure to speed up the US recovery after the worst economic crisis on record, noted that last winter, the economy was losing around 700,000 jobs a month.

"But our task is to do everything we can possibly do to accelerate that process.

"And I want to let every single American know that I will not let up until those who are seeking work can find work, until businesses that are seeking credit are able to get credit and thrive, until all responsible homeowners can stay in their homes."

"On behalf of every American, I will continue in that effort each and every day for as long as I am in this White House."

Earlier, as Obama headed back from Copenhagen, it was left to Vice President Joe Biden to give the first administration reaction to the figures.

"Today's bad news does not change my confidence in the fact that we are going to recover -- we will be producing jobs," Biden told reporters before a meeting in the White House.

Yeah, within a year and we need "real" change politically.

Obama is the only President ever to make Jimmy Carter look like a Centrist. I cant fathom what this country might look like in 2012. Unemployment at 20 percent I’m assuming

He makes Jimmah look "competent" by comparison..no easy accomplishment

As to the 20%, we can only hope.

Wasn’t it just a couple weeks ago he was raving about how the worst is behind us, the recession is over?

Sobering, mr. President? You try living for 6 months without an income.
Even Bush would have been better at recovery by now. No one will hire if they don’t know what the economy will bring!

Good thing he's never in the White House.

This is not economic recovery. This is economic failure...All due to your anti-capitalism sentiment and policies. Fess up.

Shouldn't be with the Messiah in charge.

What happened?

Too much talk, not enough action perhaps?

Political awakening in America! Watch the leftist prigs cause millions in damage as they are evicted from their offices on the hill.

We should begin collecting damage deposits right NOW!
