Iran test-fires nuclear missiles capable of hitting Israel and parts of Europe

Iran fired two of the longest-range missiles in its arsenal today ahead of a confrontation with foreign powers over a previously undisclosed secret nuclear facility later this week.

The Revolutionary Guard is reported to have successfully launched a Shahab-3 and a Sejil missile, both of which are capable of carrying nuclear warheads with a range of up to 1,200 miles – which would put Israel, most Arab states and parts of Europe, including much of Turkey, within its range.

Iranian television broadcast footage of the Shahab-3 being fired from desert terrain.

Iran’s war games began yesterday after the revelations about the enrichment plant, at a military base near the holy city of Qom. It dramatically upped the stakes for the meeting in Geneva on Thursday between Iranian representatives and those of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany.

The US should have just shot down all of these launches, just to show some capability/Backbone.

Nah, can’t be. Obama told us that they can’t reach Europe. That’s why we abandoned the missile shield. Obama has come up with a more surefire way to take down the missiles. All military personnel have been given government issue slingshots.

Uh oh - Iran better watch out for ‘escalated’ negotiations from the White House.

They’re only “nuclear” if they have an actual, LIVE NUCLEAR WARHEAD as the payload.

Otherwise, they’re just “nuclear-capable”.

Netanyahu has plenty of both.

Quite. Also, they aren't "nuclear capable" until the nukes involved are small enough to fit. A missile that would fit our most efficient warhead design wouldn't remotely carry an early generation clunker...

It’s time to stop these antisemic nutjobs once and for all just like we did with the nazis.

Dims are in control. Ergo, somebody’s going to die. Twin towers last time. Maybe we'll have a big one this time. Wonder if they'll ever get blamed.

There is precious little sign that Netanyahu or anyone else has any backbone at all, on this subject. Bush did nothing about it for eight years. Netanyahu has done nothing about it for six months.

No one is remotely serious about any of it...

As I recall, in that case we waited until they took over most of Europe and the world's balance of power hung by a thread. Then we were dependent on the arrogant diplomatic stupidities of said nutjobs to hand us extra allies by taking on the entire world. And we still didn't get into it until we were directly attacked and lost a third of the navy one morning. Let's not follow precedent too closely...

They are capable of carrying a “Payload” of whatever. What is their throw weight? How weaponized are the Nukes that the nut job is developing. Is he buying his technology from N. Korea? There are far too many variables in the mix to call them Nuclear Missiles.

Israel will act. Netanyahu will do something, I don’t think he has much of a choice...

Two things shoot out in my mind right off:

We don’t know what the payload of the Shahab-3 is, so it is a guess whether the missile can actually carry a nuclear weapon that Iran could produce far enough to reach the target.

Also, just because you have the range, does NOT mean that you can drop it where you want. the fine course control needed in the final stage, just before impact is crucial if you want to hit your target. Otherwise you risk wasting that expensive missile and the nuclear weapon going off (IF it goes off!!) in the desert, missing the target by 100 miles and tipping your hand. It practically begs “NUKE ME!!!!”.

You underestimate how easily a primitive Scud type rocket can be mated with a dirty nuclear warhead. Even if low on yield and accuracy it an sure wreak havoc on densely populated areas of Europe and Israel.

Those strongly worded letters will really hit the spot, not to mention his upcoming address to the world concerning Nuclear proliferation.
