South Africa's murder rate — one of the world's highest — has dropped slightly, but the country faces a distressing rise in rapes, robberies and hijackings, South African police said Tuesday.
The number of murders decreased 3.4 percent to 18,148 between April 2008 and March 2009. That still leaves 50 murders a day in the country of some 50 million people.
Sexual offenses increased 10.1 percent, with a total of 71,500 reported offenses. Robberies at homes and businesses increased more dramatically, up 27.3 and 41.5 percent respectively.
South Africa has one of the worst crime rates in the world, putting the government under pressure to show that safety is improving ahead of next year's soccer World Cup.
Of more concern to South African residents was the increase in house and business robberies and an increase in car hijackings...
This year, well-coordinated armed gangs have blazed through several shopping malls in Johannesburg, killing bystanders and terrifying shoppers and store owners.
"With the 2010 World Cup fast approaching, the usual rhetoric and empty promises must once and for all be brought to an end,"

When white folks were in charge, the crime rate was below average for the free world in general. The economy was one of the riches in the world. Then they put minorities in charge … look what happened!

My son will complete his masters in December at a college in Australia and has applied to attend school in Capetown starting Feb. next year to work on his doctorate. His second choice is in New Zealand. I’m voting for plan B.

Rape, murder, hijackings? Who cares. The major concern in that country right now is the Caster Semnya controversy.
White people were safer during apartheid but I’m guessing crime was still high in the townships, just not recorded so much - black on black, who cared?

“Voting”? How about “lobbying”? I’ve got family in Sydney, great people, great country, I can’t imagine NZ being anything less than stellar. That’s not a knock on anybody from S. Africa, mind you, unless they happen to be violent criminals.
Wish I knew of someone local so that I could talk to them about the situation. I get some information in bits and pieces, but I’d like to know what the situation is really like ‘on the ground’ there. Capetown freepers?

Tell him to go to New Zealand. If you’re paying his bills, insist on it. Either that or tell him to buy his own coffin and plan his funeral.
