You raise an interesting point, but who wants to stay underground for a full two weeks? I'd go crazy with cabin fever.

In my scenario, just as the bombs drop I invite a couple of nubile coeds from nearby Rice U into my shelter so as to make the time pass more quickly and to repopulate the earth afterwards. For some reason my wife keeps giving me flack about that aspect. I tell her it's my duty!

You must stay underground for two weeks to prevent you from dying from radioactive fallout(acute radiation sickness). The experts say two weeks because you must wait until fallout from primary targets pass.Just in case, you may have a supply from potassium iodide to prevent radiation sickness. There is plenty to do underground. If you have a radio(not affected EMP)or those radios that are hand cranked , you may want to check the EBS to give the all clear. Bring things to read.

The problem that scenario is there are no “nubile coeds” at Rice U.
