(09-17) 20:36 PDT -- Calling soda the new tobacco, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will introduce legislation this fall that would charge a fee to retailers that sell sugary beverages.

Newsom would need voter approval to tax individual cans of soda and sugary juice, but only needs approval from the Board of Supervisors to levy a fee on retailers.

You might think that Pelosi nephew and Governor wannabe Gavin Newsom would consider taxing this stuff if he is so concerned about the health of his San Francisconstituents.

Newsom also wants to command them perform gay weddings
Newsome also wants all churches to be closed that call it sin
Newsome also thinks parents only raise a child as a ward of the state not as their child
Newsome also hates America...how it was founded...how it was built...but, loves how it will be destroyed in his iage.

Newsom said he was particularly motivated to move forward with the legislation by Thursday's release of a UCLA study showing a link between soda and obesity in California. Researchers found that adults who drink at least one soft drink a day are 27 percent more likely to be obese than those who don't - and that soda consumption is fueling the state's $41 billion annual obesity problem.

Even if true what business is it of the government?

To discourage the drinking of soda just how high a tax are you willing to impose and how high do you think the public will tolerate?

I am long past fed up with the nanny state telling people how to live their lives. It is one thing to present supposed facts, to inform people of a potential hazard. It is another to take money out of my pocket to discourage behavior that affects no one but myself.

This argument that put forward that obesity cost the government money is only true because the state has inserted itself where in rightly does not belong, paying for health care for individuals.

They never stop. They are never satisfied. They hit tobacco, and some thought they would stop there. Wrong. They will continue until they control every aspect of daily life.

Gavin the Boy Wonder also ordered the SF Police NOT to co-operate with Federal Immigration Authorities, declaring SF a Sanctuary City.

California Voters Amended the Cal Constitution to Forbid gay marriage, and Newsom Publicly Defied them by marrying gays at City Hall.

I think liberalism should be considered a mental disorder, and half the country locked up until they get over it.

The thing is this guy is going to be going up against all the anti-gay marriage people(including the blacks who made up a big part of the vote)and he will NOT win in his bid for governor.

Great idea.

Retailers will stop selling sodas while buyers go outside the city to buy them in bulk. In the end, tax revenues decrease.

Brilliant.

It’s not that Coke@Cola is bad for your health it’s all the high fructose corn syrup in it! Just tax calories in every package in a market and dump the import tax on sugar so processors go back to the real thing...
