Being liberal means having a HUGH ego, and an unbelievable level of hubris.

Yep, it's that series!

It is simple prejudice.

We are prejuidiced against all incompetent, unqualified, muslim loving, socialistic, illegal aliens that make it to the White House.

And that is without any consideration of their skin color.

I wanted to vote for 1 and 3.

80% answer “he’s a socialist taking us in the wrong direction”. I’m guessing that poll gets taken down pronto.

they so desperately want it to be racism..but it ain’t gonna happen..

My lips are still trembling from the suppressed and well disguised rage I felt earlier today after having this same conversation in my American Government classroom. I've have taught high school deep in the inner city of the 4th largest school district in the nation for about 15 of my 20 years in the system. I see this everyday, but the "discussion" today makes me want to look at early retirement. Or maybe a transfer.

Why the difficulty today? Well the kids were all upset because one of their ENGLISH teachers (I teach American Government and Economics) was chanting about how Obama has SAVED the nation from the recession and turned around the job situation! Look, I don't horn in on teaching the subject of English, why are these folks pushing a social studies false agenda? I can't complain lest I be labeled the dreaded "R" word myself! Nothing I said made a dent. NOTHING. I put the links on my LCD screen and clicked them. In the end, it may not matter whether it's racism or NOT. In the end, it may well be all about perception for the inner city. The perception is: This is THEIR President. His moment in the limelight is their moment, too. His accomplishments are theirs and they will defend him and whatever he does literally to the death.

This is no joke to my students and their families. I have to recognize this new dynamic and tread very carefully. I have been working in the Lion's Den for a long time. The lions have grown to respect me and they have grown used to my presence. But under the right circumstances, they're not above taking a bite. These lions don't mess around when they bite, either. Last year a math teacher (pure sheep) made a misstep and got his jaw busted in three places right outside his own classroom. When I was asked about that particular incident and if I ever worried about my own safety, I gave the sheepdog answer: Son, I'm too young to die and too old to take an A$$ WHUPPIN', so .... I'm just gonna kill ya. Eyes wide as dinner plates my students just whispered in reply: Yeah, we kinda figured you'd say something like that. I need to remember that "slaughtered sheep" from last year and keep my eyes peeled, ready to act if necessary.

This is what's so sad about the danger of playing the race card. For a short time in the early 70's I taught an all-black college class, and was amazed at the LOW view they held of themselves. When I once made a remark about thinking it would be "kinda cool" to be Black (so I could have an ethnic identity because at the time I was a dyed in the wool white liberal with NO CLUE of what "being Black" was all about), my students reacted as if I'd said I wanted to be a leper! They really thought I had to be crazy to even THINK such a thing, much less say it. Their immediate and unfiltered reaction to my comment has haunted me for a long time--that's why your post has so touched me.

I almost left my classroom on the first day when, after proudly writing my name on the board and asking if there were any questions, a female student raised her hand and said, "Yeah--I have a question. How come we got some white b---- teaching this class?" At the time I was totally non-plussed, but I think now I would just respond with, "cuz there ain't no black b---- around to do it. And I'm here to change that!"

However, unlike you, I did not stick with that job for very long, not because of fear, but because 1) I was a fool when it came to men and 2) God knew I was becoming even more radical than my students and was doing them NO GOOD by pandering to them instead of teaching them.

So, sir, I admire your grit and courage in staying in your profession for so many years. I understand what you say about the pride your kids have in Obama, and how it is NEVER going to be argued away, nor will they be willing, or even able, to acknowledge any disappointment in him. He is their a "native son" (no matter what his birth certificate says)--and a symbol of "hope and change" that really does have a "messianic aura" about it. And that's why they are so defensive about those who question the "content of his character". They SO want it to be filled with all the things that make a man hero. In fact, they NEED it to be. Because in the 'hood (unless it's changed a lot in 35+ years) there aren't a lot of heros--especially male ones.

If there is one encouraging thing about Obama's election, it was the realization I heard expressed by a black high school student in (I think) an inner-city school. He said. "Now that Obama has been elected President of the United States, we have no excuse!" I cheered when I heard that--and if that message can some how be SHOUTED throughout the classrooms of the inner-cities, and throughout the 'hoods of Chicago, LA, and even Detroit, it might be the best "antidote" to the poison which oozes from the white liberal mentality, and which has celebrated the "victimhood" of blacks, and used it for political gain.

Also, it encouraged me to sense from the comment your kids made to you that they respect you for not being easily intimidated by them--as was the "sheep". So--for your sake and for theirs, I am going to pray that you "fight the good fight"--not, of course, AGAINST your students, but against those who would seek to turn them into anything other than well-educated, as opposed to well-indoctrinated--Americans!

"Now that Obama has been elected President of the United States, we have no excuse!" I cheered when I heard that--and if that message can some how be SHOUTED throughout the classrooms of the inner-cities....

I said this very thing. Last year right after the election and I got into trouble for it. I had a black, liberal assistant principal that really couldn't stand me and he was running roughshod all over the white lilly livered female principal we had at that time so I knew there would be no help from that quarter. But I've seen his type everywhere and he was not used to folks standing up to HIM, either. One of the many times I have been grateful to have spent time working for a three star general. I'm not easily intimidated by auras of authority. I knew I was right, both under federal law and my contract. I don't get tripped up after 20 years in the classroom. THIS year that Principal is gone and so is that A.P. Now we've got an ex-military hispanic guy who doesn't put up with any liberal crappola so the other liberals in his chain of command are being pretty quiet. He and I get along great, too.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. It's been a really crummy week for me and I needed that badly. My wife had breast cancer surgery two days ago and although the docs are the best in the state the poor girl still has to undergo a month of radiation and then 5 years of meds.

Oh my goodness! THANK YOU!

And God bless you, and also your dear wife. I will be praying for her, for you, and even for your students and colleagues, that God give each of you His wisdom and strength as you "fight the good fight", so that you may emerge from your various battles as "more than conquerors"!
