Protesters Disrupt UC Regents Board Meeting

The Associated Press Sep. 16, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO -- A meeting of the University of California Board of Regents was briefly disrupted by demonstrators protesting layoffs, executive pay and proposals to raise student fees.

The regents left the meeting hall at the UCSF campus Wednesday after more than 100 protesters stood up and chanted for about 15 minutes until they were forced out by campus police. Fourteen demonstrators who refused to leave were handcuffed and escorted out of the meeting room.

Most of the demonstrators were UC union employees.

UC officials are discussing plans to raise student fees by more than 30 percent next year to address rising costs and steep cuts in state funding.

Isn’t this just so logical? The UC system is apparently in serious financial trouble so what does the knuckle dragging union want - no layoffs AND no raised fees.

What do these people do in their personal lives when money gets tight - just keep right on spending as usual or do they make cuts, do without etc.?

We just got notice that UC Santa Cruz tuition is going up 7% for the upcoming school year followed by 22% the next year — a 30% compound increase in only two years! Looks like the fix was in before these goons protested.

So when conservatives shout out hard questions at public meetings the MSM label them racists and thugs. Showing their journalizitc integrity and non-partisonship, I’m sure the media will have harsh words for union members who actually chant loud enough to drown out the people holding the meeting for 15 minutes.

Er....never mind.

Tuition is $3,100 / quarter. 3 quarters in regular school year.

Mrs. POF says that the hikes are 7% for Spring, followed ANOTHER 32% for Sept. 2010 (not 22% as I said). That’s 40% hike in less than one year. Going up to about $4,300 per quarter.

Add in room & board for about $13,000 for the year and books at about $1,000/year.

Total is about $27,000/year in-State. And that’s before any spending money!
