I say they put him out in a yard with a clearly visible sniper taking aim at him and tell him that he will be shot at some point. But the sniper doesn’t fire right away, he just keeps the rifle aimed at him. Maybe he’ll shoot in the next second, or minute, or hour, hard to tell. But he is going to shoot at some point.
