Now Wait Just One Minute . . .
National Review ^ | September 14, 2009 | Victor Davis Hanson

Maureen Dowd wrote another unfortunate, poorly argued, and thinly researched column yesterday. She alleges that racism is behind the growing suspicion of the Obama administration and its initiatives. But almost everything we've seen so far has a parallel with liberal attacks on George W. Bush. By 2005, Democrats were booing him openly during his State of the Union address. Rep. Pete Stark called him a liar on the House floor. In fact, the response so far to Obama is mild in comparison to what Bush endured. That does not excuse the boorishness of Joe Wilson, but his tirade is symbolic of our loss of decorum since 2002/2003.

As we all remember, novels were published outlining dreams of killing Bush; a film on that theme won an award. Al Gore, John Glenn (of all people!), and Robert Byrd compared Bush to a brownshirt or Nazi, and they were echoed in the popular culture by the likes of Linda Rondstadt and Garrison Keiler ("brownshirts in pinstripes"). There was no liberal outcry in response.

"That does not excuse the boorishness of Joe Wilson, but his tirade..."

"You lie!" is not a tirade.

When the President of the United States can stand before Congress and tell whopper after whopper, I'd say a loss of decorum is among the least of our problems.

You have to admire her consistency.

I’ve got news for Victor David Hanson, but John Glenn has always been a socialist, with the exception of his support of the military. My father always said that he was convinced the man left his brains in orbit on his space flight. How in the world he kept getting re-elected is beyond me.

But then again, Ohio is the state that gave us Howard Metzenbaum and Sherrod Brown!

“tirade”??

Merriam’s:

“: a protracted speech usually marked by intemperate, vituperative, or harshly censorious language”

Near as I can tell, he uttered only two words (”You lie”). Hardly a “tirade.” I love VDH, but he chose his words poorly.

Plus, I don’t really think it’s “boorish” to stand up and say that “the emperor has no clothes.” Finally, someone called this charletan out.

“... reminiscent of the lunatic right during the mid-1950s. “

Obviously, he’s not read Ann Coulter’s book “Guilty” or he would not have made this statement.

MoDo: "...what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!"

Poor MoDo. She's now descended into hearing voices. Dumped by Michael Douglas years ago. An aging harpy is not a pretty sight.

This describes Obama’s speech to a tee.

It’s obvious that “the word” has gone out to the far leftist “commentators” to start calling conservatives and Republicans “racist”.

In about the last week, suddenly they all yell “racism!” on cue is no way coincidental. But who is pulling the strings to make the puppets dance?

Rahm Emanuel? Howard Dean? James Carville?

Importantly, when the Clinton machine did this, it was much more effective. Everybody among the Democrats and left had to memorize entire lists and paragraphs to recite in *exactly* the same way. They would ignore all other speakers and just parrot what they had been told to parrot, and shout down any other voices.

Like in the famous “March of the Wooden Soldiers” from the movie ‘Babes in Toyland’, the entire Democrat party had to march in lock step, and if they couldn’t, were told to shut up.

But this is just a pale imitation of that. “Be sure to call conservatives and Republicans ‘racists’ next week or two”, is so incredibly lame and hackneyed that no wonder it is just pissing the public off.

Importantly, when you see such writings, if comments are permitted, point out that this is just a cynical political ploy, and that by using it for just petty political points, these “commentators” are *themselves* being racists.

So, Maureen Dowd, you are not just a political puppet, but you are a racist political puppet.

Actually Obama is as white as he is black. So what racisim is she talking about?

And where is it written that Americans have to tolerate the antics of a president they disagree with it?

Truth is, it’s the liberals who are the racists. They seem to be the only ones who have the R word in their ordinary, everyday vocaulary.

The rest of us have dropped it a long time ago.

But I guess she thinks that’s the only way she can sell her column.

Besides, I saw a number of African-Americans being interviewed on 9-12. They define themselves as “former Obama supporters” and promise to not support him in the future. So, are they racists too?

How about this: new definition for Racism is Sore Loser!

The goodwill of the American people was Obama’s to lose. And he somehow managed to do that in less than a year in office.

Adn to add to his idiocy is his new tariff/turf was with the Chinese government! It’s a great lesson in his short sightedness because he kind of forgot who was buying the debt of this country when he was printing all that money to pay for the trillions of debt he is introducing to the US economy.

The Chinese have told him to quit spending.

And as always, it will be the American consumer who pays the higher prices for their tires. I can guarantee you that the Chinese are going to pass the new tariff down to the price at the tire stores. In essence, Obama’s new tariff is not a punishment for the Chinese. Rather, it amounts to a new tax increase on the American taxpayer.

Best yet, Dowd referred to Obama as “boy” and got away with it.

I agree.
His need to insert apologetic PC language tripped him up. "Outburst" would have been both more accurate and appropriate.

sometimes, under provoking circumstances, (true) things come out when one should bite one's lip.

Happens to the best of them.
