Girl Rejects Gardasil, Loses Path to Citizenship

Teen Asks Why She Should Take Vaccine If She is Not Having Sex, Worries About Dangers Born in Britain in 1992, Simone Davis got off to a rough start in life. Her biological mother abandoned her as a baby, and her father couldn't care for her.

At 3, Simone was adopted by her paternal grandmother, Jean Davis, who married an American in 2000 and moved them to Port St. Joe, Fla.

But because the adoption was not recognized in the United States, Davis embarked on a near-decade quest to get Simone U.S. citizenship.

Now 17 and an aspiring elementary school teacher and devout Christian, Simone has only one thing standing in the way of her goal -- the controversial vaccine Gardasil.

Immigration law mandates that Simone get the vaccine to protect against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, which has been linked to cervical cancer.

But Simone, who has taken a virginity pledge and is not sexually active, doesn't see why she should have to take the vaccine, especially since it's been under fire recently regarding its safety .

And none of her American classmates is mandated by law to be vaccinated.

"I am only 17 years old and planning to go to college and not have sex anytime soon," said Simone. "There is no chance of getting cervical cancer, so there's no point in getting the shot."

Since 2008, the government has required that female immigrants between the ages of 11 through 26 applying for permanent resident or refugee status receive Gardasil, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2006.

Simone and her adoptive mother she still calls "Nanny" sought a waiver for moral and religious reasons and were recently rejected by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Other Freepers, please weigh in on this:

I would rather have new citizens like this girl who will actually stand up for the right thing, than a the bleating sheep that Tempest apparently wants to become citizens. We already have enough sheep here.

Now let's think this one through for a second. This is a vaccine, like vaccines that are required on every student to attend elementary schools (small pox, polio, flu, etc.). Most vaccines are done for the benefit of society as a whole. In this case, giving a person an immunity to a sexually spread virus that is tied to cervical cancer, seems to be a good thing. She may not be sexually active, but is her future husband banging everything that moves?

Let's think this through even further. What if she takes the vaccine and becomes sterile. Or, paralyzed. Now she can never have the children, or probably a husband. So, so much for protecting her future husband.

It should be her choice. This is not a childhood disease like you alluded to.

Conservative, abrupt, and logical.

Not in this case. You keep referring to diseases that are transmitted by airborne or simple contact. This case is about sexually a transmitted disease. No LOGICAL analogy.

I don't disagree about this SHOULD be her choice, but during the Clinton years, Immigration law was changed such that all immigrants are required to have the FDA recommended vaccinations. The HPV vaccine is an FDA recommended vaccine.

So, either she gets the vaccine, or she packs her bags and leaves the country. No one is above the law (unless you are Mexican, in which case anyone who questions your right to live anywhere or do anything is inherently a bigot).

I don't see any reason why this young woman would make a bad citizen. Thus far she has followed the law. She has requested an exemption from a particular requirement, but the law allows for such requests.

Someone who challenges a stupid law is precisely the kind of person I'd like to call a fellow American.

If you are looking for a source for the Gardasil deaths, you can look in the VAERS, “Vaccine Adverse Event Report System.” The search engine is here.

http://www.medalerts.org/vaersdb/index.html

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/vaers/gardasil.htm

“A 21-year old Maryland artist, athlete and honor roll college student died suddenly without explanation in June 2008 after her third Gardasil shot. She is one of the 29 Gardasil death reports in VAERS.”

I do have a report that I filed of all 29 deaths, and if requested by FReeps, I would be more than happy to release said information.
