Police are investigating the death of the former chief fundraiser for ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich as a "death-suicide," an Illinois mayor said Sunday.
Christopher Kelly, 51, was former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's chief fundraiser.
Financier Christopher Kelly told police shortly before he died Saturday that he took an "overdose of drugs," said Dwight Welch, mayor of Country Club Hills, Illinois.
Country Club Hills police found several drugs in Kelly's black 2007 Cadillac Escalade, but they were not sure yet whether they were prescribed, Welch said. Country Club Hills is about 27 miles south of Chicago.
Kelly had recently undergone surgery and was taking drugs following the operation, Welch said. Welch said he did not know which drugs Kelly was taking.
Kelly, 51, of Burr Ridge, Illinois, was pronounced dead at Stroger hospital in Cook County at 10:46 a.m. Saturday, hospital spokesman Marcel Bright told CNN.
Autopsy results were expected Sunday afternoon, Welch said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office did not comment on the results, but said that a ruling on Kelly's death was "pending further studies."
Don't Miss Key Blagojevich player is dead, ex-governor says Burris won't seek Senate seat in 2010 Toxicology results won't be available for "some time," Welch said.
Blagojevich blamed the government for Kelly's death.
"I don't know any more than you know, except that a friend of mine took his life because he refused to submit to the pressure by the government to lie about me," Blagojevich told CNN. "And to think that it comes to something like that begs a lot of questions."
Blagojevich said his statement that Kelly "took his life" was based on what he had read in news reports.
Earlier this year, Blagojevich, who was impeached and removed fro

Absolutely...it is a blood thinner. Aspirin is a dangerous drug when taken improperly. There may have been other drugs involved but it is certainly possible to overdose on aspirin.
I wish blago would come clean and just rat out obama and rahm.
The only witnesses were the three Obama goons that held him down....
I say all of this to say, once a person is in a profound metabolic acidosis, they usually are not explaining what transpired during their day.
He would have had to take in excess of 20 grams of salicylate.
My question is....."With this man talking to the police, even if obtunded, it seems very, very reasonable to believe he could have been take to the nearest medical facility for treatment, which is fairly standard ER/Internal Medicine fare. How could he have been conscious, speaking, and lucid and once he told them he OD'd of aspirin and then not rushed to the ER. Something is fishy.
I’ve understood that a high dose of aspirin can mask a certain poison. I’m sure some FReeper will correct me if mistaken, lol.
The first reports were of an “Aspirin overdose” ... so obviously, we need a Federal 3-day waiting period to buy this very dangerous drug.
Two words: very suspicious.
Exactly. If he was talking, he certainly wasn’t in the later stages of toxicity. If so, one would think he could get treatment in hopes of preventing his death. More details needed.
Just boggles the mind.
No he didn’t say that...for some reason they are backing off of that staement now the way I understand it. Don’t trust CNN to report this or any news correctly.
Watch the presser yourself.
First he indicates that Kelly admitted he took something..then he says he didn’t..then he says he is not sure and can’t comment.
VERY STRANGE PRESSER HERE(unedited):
http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/09/mayor-kellys-girlfriend-is-lawyered-up-not-talking.html
IMO...Rahm has graduated from just sending dead fish.
Was this a message to Blago?
Watch the presser. The mayor claims at the beginning that they believe the ‘aspirin or whatever drug was taken’ was taken between 9:00-10:00 pm. At 2:58 a.m. police are called Saturday to interview Kelly and his girlfriend, who identified herself as Clarissa Flores of Chicago. She told police she was Kelly’s girlfriend and had driven Kelly to the hospital. He was later transported to Stroger Hospital at 4:15 a.m. and pronounced dead at 10:46 a.m. Saturday.”
The vomit was found in the parking lot,in the car and on him. Usually after the vomiting part of an aspirin overdose, the person begins having trouble breathing and rapidly goes downhill without treatment..yet Kelly was sitting up on the gurney talking. Acute aspirin overdose has a mortality rate of only 2%(according to Wiki..which ain’t much).
Presser Here:
Scroll down for video of presser. It’s a strange one. The mayor claims there was no security cameras at a storage place and lumber yard? That is ridiculous on the surface!
As opposed to the far less common "life-suicide"?
First, I have no more understanding of the pressor than you....but I have done General/Trauma surgery for 25+ years and what I just heard from the good mayor is bullsh*t in the extreme.
First, Why is the MAYOR of a hamlet of Chicago conducting a press conference regarding a death investigation? If I were the DA I would prosecute him for interference with an official investigation.
If I got it correct Kelly was alert, awake, and speaking while at the first hospital (Oak Forrest Hospital). If they have an emergency room staffed by a ER physician and if they have Internists on call they can handly this case at this precise point. Next he was transferred to Strogen Hospital where he was still alert. Then, according the Welch, the attending wanted him transferred to Cook County because it was a Level III trauma center. Why? There had been no traumatic injuries reported regarding Kelly, unless the "groin" surgery (a controlled trauma) was the reason....(but it had been a week since his elective surgery....sounds like he had a herniorrhaphy. This brings us another quesiton. Someone who is despondent and contemplating suicide....why would he go through an elective surgery. Elective surgery is so you will feel better in months and years to come. If you are going to kill yourself people generally do not think of long term plans. The one reason he might be referred to Cook County is because his private physician(s) practice there which is very, very unlikely...it is a county dumping ground.
Welch moves inexplicably from...."I cannot divuldge specifics of the case",....to....."I will give you a copy of the driver license personal identification of Ms.Flores", to all of the newspeople. A bit of a taint there, I think.
Now, what do we know a bout Cook County Hospital. Well, who runs that hospital and thus would be able to control information out of it. The City Fathers...the Daley machine. Who does not want Blago to speak on 'inproprieties' and malfeasance of the Political Machine of Chicago......well it is the same people. My, My.
If this patient had died in my hospital the physician principles would be brought before morbidity/mortality commiteess and have to explain themselves. Clearly the level of care did not rise to the standard everyone deserves in this country.
It sounds like Mr.Kelly needed to be in a controlled environment to finish a job. He was, in essence, murdered...The best I can say is it was a medical murder.
Jim McDougal, call your office. Oh wait. Never mind.
Excellent points..especially the part about his ‘elective’ surgery(unless the mob had done a little ‘surgery’ on him at the lumber yard and they can’t let that get out...lol).
You touched on something that I didn’t catch and that is the part about a conversation about him being trasferred to yet a third hospital(Cook County). I assumed that the Stroger hospital WAS the hospital in Cook County. Still confused on that part.
BTW..the mayor is now backing off of the part about Kelly telling anyone he was trying to commit suicide.

So glad that a doctor is weighing in on this. Thank you for your insights. My husband took a half a bottle of baby aspirin when he was a child. It was a very small town..no ‘trauma center’ etc. They pumped his stomach and gave him charcoal and he was fine(that was around 45 years ago). Surely they have made even more progress in treating aspirin overdoses by now.
Your point about the mayor giving out all the details of this woman and then clamming up when it came to Kelly was also an excellent point.
Thanks for your post. There is definately a murder here! No doubt that they will try to hide everything they can behind the HIPA laws too.
Wow, it sounds very fishy! My doctor always says to be more leery of Tylenol than aspirin.
The grey-haired man is rumored to be Daniel T. Frawley. Why haven’t charges been brought against Daniel Frawley for his complicity in the Companion Security fraud? Frawley is demonstrably mentally unstable and violent, with a list of judgments against him. Frawley was only a Chicago cop for 7 months before being thrown off the police force for excessive violence and has no college degree.
What gives with the lack of charges on this fraud perpetrated against the taxpayers with Blago?
